About this Item: Condition: Wie neu. Museum Ludwig Köln. Snoeck 2014. New, mint, unread, still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s plastic foil. Hardback with bellyband (as issued). 285 x 242 mm. Edited by: Barbara Engelbach. Texts: Jennifer Crowley, Barbara Engelbach, Lena Fritsch. Text in english and german. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! Wonderful photobook! "In 1979, Roland Barthes distinguished between two different approaches to photography - its taming through aesthetic categories such as authorship, oeuvre and genre, or its frenetic impact that he saw rooted in the `awakening of the intractable reality`. Twenty years on, photography, in particular, is discussed as a document able to re-evaluate the relationship between aesthetics and ethics. In the publication of the exhibition at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, both considerations form the starting point for an exemplary presentation of historical lots of documentary photography that examine the aesthetic, ethical, performative and political references of an `intractable reality`; included are works by: Robert Adams, Derek Bennett, Joachim Brohm, David Goldblatt, Candida Höfer, Miyako Ishiuchi, Ute Klophaus, Karl C. Kugel, Boris Mikhailov, Gabriele and Helmut Nothhelfer, Thomas Ruff, Raghubir Singh. The documentary attitude is not just discernable in the photographs, but also in their use. The following questions are therefore addressed to each photo series: Who took the pictures, when and where, on whose behalf, to whom are they addressed, where and how were they first released? And what ways of approaching photography can be determined at present? With several introductory texts, the exhibition catalog presents leading photographic and documentary positions. Cross-references to history also reassess the actuality of current documentary photography and provide an important contribution to the debate on the documentary in general. With a comprehensive work-monographic bibliography it presents a means for further research." (publisher`s text)***************Museum Ludwig Köln. Snoeck 2014. Seller Inventory # 23838

About this Item: Condition: Wie neu. Kehrer, Heidelberg. 2014. First german edition, first printing. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s plastic foil. Half-cloth hardcover (as issued). 240 x 320 mm. 152 pages. 70 color and duotone illustrations. Design: Kehrer Design. Editor: Dragana Vujanovic, Louise Wolthers. Texts: Lena Fritsch, Christopher Phillips. Text in german and english. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "Japanese photographer Miyako Ishiuchi, one of the most respected and compelling photographers of her generation, is the 34rd recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography. This publication celebrates her artistic achievements with a thorough presentation of the main themes in her work: remembrance, fabric, and the body. A significant feature in her work is the meaning and treatment of surface, whether the human skin, the materiality of an object, or personal clothing. Through close attention to surfaces - as traces, mediations, and symbols - Ishiuchi tackles head-on the poetics and politics of history, as for instance women`s life in post-war Japan or the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The book includes works from Ishiuchi`s major series 1947, Scars, Mother`s, Hiroshima, Silken Dreams, and Frida by Ishiuchi. Two new essays by Christopher Phillips and Lena Fritsch offer in-depth analysis of her art." (publisher`s text)***************Kehrer, Heidelberg. 2014. Deutsche Erstausgabe. (Verlagstext) Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1600. A Mint copy. From the artist: "Undertaking the prints of buildings of the Akasen-ato (former red-light district) once again [Ishiuchi photographed here circa 1978-1980], these structures representing the enterprises of human beings, the skin and bones of the times and a painted beauty and repulsiveness rising up to the surface, where tiles, symbol of hygienism, are employed again and again.it briefly occurs to me that this sensation, of my heart racing inexplicably when I see tiles in these spaces through which these tile patterns extend loudly and garishly, is something akin to desire. In addition to the decorative tiles, there are the heart patterns, which are another symbol. They can be found all over, abstract and deconstructed, in cut-out form, or crafted in any number of other ways, and I had taken shots of quite a few heart patterns before actually realizing it. Some of these districts already no longer exist, but not all of these buildings have disappeared. There are some houses still continuing in the same line of work at the same location today. Since it is this town's own nature to change its look in accordance with the passing times by applying a rather thick layer of makeup, if one would try studying its aspect carefully, one would be able to stumble into the endless night anytime."Ishiuchi is the winner of the 2014 Hasselblad Award. From the Hasselblad Foundation: "During a period of 35 years Miyako Ishiuchi has established an international career, which is both impressive and highly significant. Her strength of character and uncompromising vision has resulted in some of the most powerful as well as personal representations of postwar Japan. Ishiuchi's work is extremely coherent and developing in a determined and distinctive way; using the camera and all of its aesthetic potential to investigate the intersection of the political and the personal aspects of memory Ishiuchi has been both a pioneer and a role model for younger artists, not least as a woman working in the male-dominated field of Japanese photography. She has continued to innovate, explore and agitate throughout her career, both in terms of ideas and of her style and approach." Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 110904

About this Item: Condition: Wie neu. Seigensha Art Publishing, 2012. First edition, first printing. Signed by Miyako Ishiuchi! Mint, new, unread; opened only once for the signature. Paperback with dustjacket and bellyband. 226 x 278 mm. Color photos. Fantastic photobook! Perfect condition! Signed by the artist! Collector`s copy! Very beautiful photobook by one of the most important japanese photographers. Famous for "Mother`s" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, vol 2, page 320), "Apartment" (Ryuichi Kaneko, Ivan Vartanian, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and `70s, page 206-211) or "Yokusuka Story" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, vol 1, page 304). Renowned photographer Ishiuchi Miyako documents the history and omnipresence of silk in Japanese culture, giving special attention to the inexpensive meisen-kimono, which, with its plain weave of waste silk, transcended the industry`s traditional aesthetic sense. The book shows how the traditions and formalities of silk are deeply rooted in an entire generation of women, for whom it is inseparably tied to the modernisation of Japan. With stunning detail and colour, `From Cocoons` breathes life into the process of silk production and textile fabrication, and richly illustrates the myriad patterns of the kimonos, collected in this case at the Kiryu Private Textile School.***************Seigensha Art Publishing, 2012.
