About this Item: München, 1983, Orbis Verlag, 1983. Pappband. 27 cm 240 seiten. . . James Fenimore Cooper, Der letzte Mohikaner . . . Alexandre Dumas, Der Graf von Monte Christo . . . Friedrich Gerstäcker, Die Flußpiraten des Mississippi.Herman Melville, Moby Dick.Jules Verne, Fünf Wochen im Ballon.Mark Twain, Die Abenteuer des Tom Sawyer"Auszüge aus dem Buch 900 Gramm. Buch. About this Item: Random House, New York, 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Kent, Rockwell (illustrator). 1st Edition. First trade edition, duodemico size, 823 pp. First trade edition of Moby Dick illustrated by Rockwell Kent; the Lakeside Press published a limited edition in three volumes with 280 illustrations; this trade edition is in a smaller format and uses 272 of the illustrations. Rockwell Kent was already well-known and his appeal has continued to grow; his work remains widely collected today. Interestingly, while Melville wrote Moby Dick in 1851, it was almost neglected until Kent elected to illustrate the story; his illustrated version had tremendous success and revived the novel for the 20th century.___DESCRIPTION: Black cloth boards with silver letting on front and spine, both the front and spine also display Kent's own design of a whale, with the head on the front and the tail on the spine, cream endpapers, vintage bookseller's ticket on the rear pastedown from Capwell, Sullivan & Furth, Oakland, Calif., with their price sticker of $3.50. Volume is replete with Kent's black-and-white pen/brush and ink drawings which made him justly so famous; duodecimo size (approximately 7" tall), 822 pages plus a one-page Epilogue.___CONDITION: Volume could almost be termed fine, the silver gilt on the front and spine is bright with minimal rubbing, the volume has a square, strong text block and solid hinges, gently bumped head and tail of spine, and also corners with a single miniscule rubbed corner (lower front), and entirely free of prior owner markings; minor toning to the endpapers and a very small (approximately one-half inch) crack to the bottom of the back hinge, else fine. A stunning example of a literary icon which endures in our cultural consciousness. ___CITATION: Rockwellkentiana, pg. 62.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller nquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
