First Edition. preface by Elizabeth Ray, introduction by Elizabeth David, Vocabulary of Terms Used in Modern Cookery, weights and measures and index. The text is illustrated with the occasional black-and-white line drawing. Maroon coloured boards with gilt coloured decoration and titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the back strip. A black-and-white sketch of Miss Acton has been placed to the rear panel. Eliza Acton first published her cookery book, Modern Cookery for Private Families, in 1845, and, remained in print for the next 70 years. This book is a careful selection of her recipes, that are manageable to the modern cook. ''While giving the recipes exactly as they were written by Miss Acton, whose style is not the least charm of this classic book, she (editor) has added notes and explanations for the modern cook with modern equipment. The recipes are embellished with engravings from the original edition.'' -- from the front fold over panel blurb. This book is an ex-library book and has the faults of same: - library stamps to the text block edges and occasionally throughout the text. Library pocket and due back page are still attached to the rear endpapers. Residue of tape can be seen to the end pages and there is slight age toning of the text block edges and pages present. A little creasing of the dustwrapper edges and rubbing of the panels. Sunning of the fold over panels. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series.
