Item Description: Litho, Atlanta, GA, 1948. Soft Cover. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. A GOOD, clean, tight copy. White plastic spiral-bound. From the author's Introduction: "It is impossible for this one exercise book to revolutionize our rhythmical conceptions even if that were its aim, which of course, isn't the aim at all. It is hoped, however, that this book will, to some degree, develop a measure of coordinated independence between the hands and feet in executing rhythmic figures against the standard cymbal rhythm. More specifically, the study of this book and the practice of its exercises will be primarily useful to the dance drummer in playing with the brass sections in big bands, and in improving the short solo fill-ins characteristic of the ultramodern "be-bop" jazz. Perhaps more valuable though less tangible, a purpose of these exercises is the improvement of the drummers' general control and flexibility." 51 pages. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Item Description: Printed by E.C. for James Collins at the Kings Head in Westminster-Hall, London, 1668. First Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. [xvi] + 160pp. Contemporary leather boards with blind to margins, rebacked with a plain leather spine. An extremely scarce early (third) printing of this collection of accounts of witchcraft and supernatural phenomenon - gathered together to give weight to Glanvill's arguments supporting a belief in the validity of the phenomena. The work would eventually become one of the best known English defences of witchcraft under a later title: "Saducismus Triumphatus." The text was first published under the title "A Philosophical Endeavor Towards the Defence of the Being of Witches and Apparitions" in 1666, but according to the DNB most of the copies were destroyed almost immediately thereafter in the Great Fire of London. It was then republished under the title "Some Philosophical Considerations Touching the Being of Witches and Apparitions" in 1667 and then again the following year (1668) under the title "A Blow at Modern Sadducism." It was reissued later that same year with the same title ("A Blow at Modern Sadducism") but in an expanded form and with "The Fourth Edition Corrected and Inlarged" printed on the title-page. It was finally republished, in a new edition, and under the now familiar title "Saducismus Triumphatus" in 1681, and much reprinted thereafter. This is the first of the 1668 printings (thus the "unstated" third edition). The copy starts with a general title-page ("A Blow at Modern Sadducism in some Philosophical Considerations about Witchcraft, [etc] . 1668") followed immediately by a secondary title page "A Philosophical endeavor in the defence of the being of witches and apparitions with some things concerning the famous Greatrek's written in a letter to the much Honoured Robert Hunt, Esq. . 1668" with p. 91 being second section-title" "Palpable evidence of spirits and witchcraft . 1668." The register and pagination are continuous throughout. While copies of the "fourth edition" occasionally show on the market, editions such as this representing the early state of the text are genuinely rare. The whole of the rear free end-paper of this copy is taken up with a manuscript note (written ca. 1800) which records an incident that took place at "a Farm House near Daventry Northamptonshire" in 1797, and which the unidentified author says to be similar to that of the "daemon of Tedworth" recounted in Glanvill's text. The note ends: "The whole of which there was every reason to believe (if reasoning may be heard and believed) was an errant Impostor conducted (for motives unknown) to impose upon weak minds and people of unsuspecting credulity": surely sentiments with which Glanvill would not have approved. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. Boards rubbed - especially at corners which are rounded - and somewhat bowed. Owner's name on front free endpaper (appears to be the same hand and pen as the notes on the rear free endpaper). Brown stain to bottom corner of last ten leaves (quite small - it only reaches the text in a few places), occasional creases and discoloration to pages typical for a book of this vintage. Still a solid, complete VG copy. Bookseller Inventory # 46451
