About this Item: Brooklyn, 1894. Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Publisher's cloth; 8vo; pp. xiii, [1], 262, plus frontispiece portrait. Cloth a bit scuffed; spine tips and corners bumped. Front hinge cracked, but holding; wrinkle at top corner, throughout text block. A good working copy -- internally clean and unmarked. Mollie Fancher (1848-1916) was famous for her claim of not eating, or eating very little for extended periods of time. She attended a reputable school and, by all reports, was an excellent student. At age 16, she was diagnosed with dyspepsia. At around the age of 19, reports came out that she had abstained from eating for seven weeks. It was after two accidents, in 1864 and 1865, that she became famous for her ability to abstain from food. As a result of the accidents, Mollie Fancher lost her ability to see, touch, taste, and smell. She claimed to have powers that involved her being able to predict events as well as to read without the ability of sight. By the late 1870s, she was claiming to eat little or nothing at all for many months. Her claim to abstinence from food lasted for 14 years. Doctors and people in the public began to question her abilities and wished to perform tests to determine the truthfullness of her claims. The claims to abstinence were never verified. Bound in maroon publisher’s cloth. Spine is lightly faded; some minor spots of rubbing and bumping. A name with a date (1895) is printed on the front free fly leaf. Interior pages are clean. Mollie Fancher (d.1916) was a Brooklyn woman who suffered two accidents at the age of 17 and as a result became bind and partially paralyzed. Afterwards she displayed signs of supposed clairvoyance and split personality. She was also able to exist for long periods with little or no food. Witnesses testified to her being able to read books and letters clairvoyantly as well as identify lost objects. Over time Fancher became "possessed" or plagued by several different personalities with names such as Sunbeam, Idol and Rosebud (Shepard, Encyc. of Occultism I, p.323-24).
