The first volume has a tissue-guarded engraved frontispiece portrait of the author (by William Holl, the elder) facing an additional engraved title (by William Finden). Title pages in red and black lettering. Decorative initials. Sir William Dugdale's "Monasticon Anglicanum" is an extensive and spectacular collection of monastic charters and others sources relating to English monasteries and collegiate churches from the 6th century to the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s. Since the development of the monasteries and the Church of England were inextricably linked, this collection offers a valuable insight into the medieval religious world, and a history of the foundations of all the principal churches in England. The main body of the work is divided into sections each dealing with one monastic order, such as the Benedictines, the Cistercians, the Gilbertines, the Carthusians, the Knights Hospitalars of St John of Jerusalem, the Knights Templars, etc., with the buildings belonging to them: Vols. I, II, III and IV are devoted to Benedictine Monasteries; Vol. V is devoted to the Monasteries of the Cluniac and the Cistercian Orders; Vol VI, part I is devoted to the Carthusian Order, as well as the Order of St. Augustine; Vol VI, part II is devoted to the Hospitals of the Order of St. Augustine, the Knights Hospitalars of St John of Jerusalem, the Knights Templars, the Premonstratensian Order, the Gilbertine Order, Alien Priories, Cells to Foreign Monasteries, French Monasteries, Irish and Scotch Monasteries; Vol. VI, part III is devoted to Cathedral Churches of Secular Canons, Collegiate Churches of Secular Canons, Orders of Friars, including Nuns Minoresses. This last volume also includes a Memoranda of destroyed monasteries, an Appendix, and a General Index. This set is complete with its striking 245 tissue-guarded full-page and double-leaved plates (including William Dugdale's portrait). It includes engraved portraits of monastic figures showing the distinctive dress of each order (engraved by William Finden after drawings by Hollar), floor plans, arms and seals of monasteries, exterior and interior views of churches, abbeys and monasteries. Also includes a tree exhibiting the various Congregations of the Benedictine Order (vol. 1). Most of the copper plates were drawn and engraved by John Coney, others were engraved by William Finden, George Hollis, J. Lee, and William Byrne. This work was originally published in London in three volumes under the joint authorship of Roger Dodsworth and Sir William Dugdale (1655-73). A continuation in two volumes was also published in London under the title: "The history of the antient abbey, monasteries, hospitals, cathedral and collegiate churches. Being two additional volumes to Sir William Dugdale's Monasticon anglicanum, by John Stevens (1722-23)" This handsome 1849 edition is a reissue of Bohn's 1846 edition, with the greater part of the copper plates executed by John Coney, from sketches made by him expressly for the work. All the engravings are present. Volume 1 has 57 plates (of 58 wanted) but the 'missing' plate of a Benedictine Nun is to be found in Volume 2, facing page 451); Vol. 2 has 38 plates of 37 wanted (the "Nun" plate); Vol. 3 has 17 plates, of which two are in-text woodcuts; Vol. 4 has 14 plates; Vol. 5 has 18 plates; Vol. 6, part 1 has 34, Vol. 6, part 2 has 22; and Vol. 6, part 3 has 45 plates. About this Item: Richard Hodgkinsonne 1655, 1661, & 1673, London, 1655. First Edition. 3 volumes, folio, contemporary leather, modern rebacking in leather, new endsheets, illustrated with engraved pre title, some text illustrations and 108 plates many folding, [40], 1151; 3, [14], 2, 1057; [6], 378, 218, [379-392 first index in volume 3] pp. Leather scuffed in places, one plate missing top half, a second possibly missing bottom portion of plate, but image appears complete, another plate upside down, some soiling, foxing and normal aging, a few pages with tears, but not affecting text; overall nice set of a very rare first edition. William Dugdale (1605-1681) was born at the Shustoke rectory to an old Lancashire family, and was educated at the King Henry VIII School in Coventry. As a young man, he showed an inclination for antiquarian studies, and through a relationship with Sir Christopher Hatton was commissioned to make exact drafts of all the churches in England in 1641. After a visit to France in 1648 he continued his antiquarian studies in London, and collaborated with Richard Dodsworth on his Monasticon Anglicanum, which was published in 1655, 1661, and 1673. It has been reported that Dugdale himself sold copies to booksellers who passed them along to a small, but appreciative audience. The work provided a history of the various orders in England, and an account of the individual monasteries. While other major editions of this work were published in 1693, 1718 and 1846, because each volume was published separately, it is very difficult to find a complete set of the first edition. It is difficult to determine the right number of plates for this edition, but it appears this set has 108. The 1718 edition seems to have a larger number of plates. Dugdale's other major works include Antiquaries of Warwichshire (1656) and History of St. Paul's Cathedral (1658). The set includes a letter dated November 30, 1956 from a bookseller acknowledging the sale of the set to a buyer. Extra postage required. Seller Inventory # 100193

A beautiful, large paper set of the first abridged edition of this magnificent work on English churches and religious orders, profusely illustrated with views of the churches and the habits of the various orders of monks and nuns. Collations are haphazard for this set, with copies having 140-150 plates; this copy has 154 and is quite complete. Lowndes notes: ¿An excellent epitome¿ and calls for 151 plates, giving a full collation of all the plates and erratic pagination. The difference may be attributable to not counting some double-page plates. Seller Inventory # 006189

Monasticon Anglicanum: a history of the abbies: DUGDALE, Sir William,

About this Item: London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown; Lackington, Hughes, Mavor, & Jones; and Joseph Harding, 181730, 1817. 2 works in 8 volumes, bound as 18, folio (475 x 320 mm). Uniformly bound in mid-19th-century deep purple morocco by Clarke & Bedford, richly gilt spines, gilt ornamental panels on sides, gilt supralibros of Archibald Acheson (third Earl of Gosford) on front covers, all edges gilt, richly gilt roll tool turn-ins, marbled endpapers. From the library of the Irish judge William O'Brien (1832-1899), whose discerning collection is a microcosm of late 19th-century taste in book collecting, and included a handful of medieval manuscripts, incunabula, Aldine editions, three Shakespeare folios, 16th-century English books and handsome editions of English literature; subsequent labels of Milltown Park Library; spines (and some covers) lightly sunned, occasional dark mottling, internally some foxing and light offsetting from plates to letterpress. An excellent set. Monasticon: half-titles, additional engraved titles, letterpress titles in red and black (in 8 volumes), 243 engraved plates (52 double-page); Saint Paul's: half-titles, engraved frontispiece in part one, 64 engraved plates (7 double-page); wood-engraved decorative initials throughout. First of these editions, each of the large paper issue limited to 50 sets, with proof plates; the Gosford Castle copy. "In the early 'forties, [Archibald Acheson] the third earl of Gosford (1806-1864) had formed at Gosford Castle, in Ireland, a large and extremely beautiful library which was sold by private contract in 1878 to the London bookseller James Toovey" (Seymour De Ricci, English Collectors of Books & Manuscripts, 1930, p. 156). A part of the library - "the history, topography, natural history and the important series of books on large paper" (ibid.) - were dispersed through the sale rooms of Puttick and Simpson in April 1884 but some were retained by Toovey's heirs, and the choicest books passed into the Pierpont Morgan library in 1899. Dudgdale and Dodsworth's monumental Monasticon Anglicanum was first published between 1655 and 1673. "It gave the history of the various orders in England, and an account of all the individual monasteries. The surviving foundation charters, and charters relating to the growth of the monastery, were printed in full, and all known benefactions of land made to the monastery were set down. Monasticon Anglicanum established for the first time the importance of charters as a primary source for the writing of medieval history, and as a source for understanding the legal practice of earlier centuries and aspects of the feudal system relating to conditions of tenure. Equally it established for the first time since the Reformation the importance of monasteries and the scale of their territorial possessions" (ODNB). This superb Regency edition "contains everything in the original, and in [the antiquary, John] Stevens's continuation [of 1722-23], with an English account of each monastery, and additions from the Chapter House, Westminster, and public libraries" (Lowndes). It also drew on the records in the Tower of London and the Cottonian collection. Dugdale's history of Saint Paul's originally issued in 1658 - became "the lasting memorial of old St Paul's" (ODNB) after the great fire of 1666 destroyed the old building. The original plates by Wenceslaus Hollar were re-engraved for this edition by the Finden brothers but the majority of the fine new plates are by the draughtsman and engraver John Coney. With some considerable justification, the editors describe Coney in their Preface as "an artist whose execution possesses the freedom and delicacy of Piranesi, without his occasional obscurity and coarseness". The art historian Michael Bryan, a contemporary of Coney's, refers to his plates as being "executed with consummate skill. His drawings exhibit all the minutest details without the appearance of labour, yet with a neatness that is truly surprising" (Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers). One of the finest English books of the period, here superbly bound. Seller Inventory # 119684
