Each entry of the Atelier sales includes the title, dimensions, and a BW illus. of the piece. Parts of this particular set once belonged to Paul Joseph Sachs (1878-1965), who was affiliated with Harvard's Fogg Art Museum and with the financial firm of Goldman-Sachs. His bookplate and signature appear in the books. Perhaps he is the one who had the softbound catalogs bound. Rare, and seldom seen in a complete set like this. VG- (Vol. 2 is missing tp; all 3 vols. have wear on spines and part of titling is missing; otherwise, in great shape.) Softcover volumes exhibit wear, and the Estampes volume has significant water staining to the upper pages, including some illustrations, but no pages are sticking.

Orig. printed wrappers in sleeve and slipcase. One of 325 numbered copies on vélin de Rives filigrané. The only book illustration by Edgar Degas specifically planned for that purpose. Degas (1834 1917), une grande vedette moderne" (Carteret), was conceiving the idea to illustrate Halévys novel since the 1880ies. The project was abandoned, and only 20 years after the artist s dead the illustrations were published in the present Blaizot edition. Carteret IV, 197; Monod 5797; The Arist and the Book 71.
