Destination, Rates & Speeds

Item Description: Montgomery Ward & Co.,, Chicago & Kansas City:, 1912. Thick folio. 846 pp. Over 1000 text illustrations, many colour tinted, a few full colour plates with numerous illustrations. Tan illustrated and printed softcovers, cover art of Montgomery Ward warehouse in Kansas city w/ railroad lines stretching out across the west, lettering & illustration in gray, black, & white (minor edgewear, creasing, uniform interior toning as usual, a couple leaves w/ minor closed tears at fore-edges of textblock), still a VG bright copy. First edition of this scarce and complete mail order catalogue for all the merchandise that Montgomery Ward & Co. carried at the height of the Edwardian era, or Gilded Age. This catalogue features substantial and extended sections for buggies, wagons, carriages, hackneys, horse blankets, saddles, horse tack, farm equipment, ovens, stoves, furnishings, jewelry, books, men & women's fashions, and much more. Of particular interest is the large advertisement section for the Montgomery Ward Modoc Automobile, outfitted with a 4-cylinder 30/40 horsepower engine, 3-speed transmission, and touring body with self-starter option. Although this was marketed as "The car without a weakness," customers disagreed, and after deep discounting the Modoc ceased production by the end of 1914. Bookseller Inventory # 51912
