Moonchild is a novel written by the British occultist Aleister Crowley in 1917. Its plot involves a magical war between a group of white magicians, led by Simon Iff, and a group of black magicians over an unborn child. It was first published by Mandrake Press in 1929 and its recent edition is published by Weiser. In this work, numerous acquaintances of Crowley appear as thinly disguised fictional characters. Crowley portrays MacGregor Mathers as the primary villain, including him as a character named SRMD, using the abbreviation of Mathers' magical name. Arthur Edward Waite appears as a villain named Arthwaite, and the unseen head of the Inner Circle of which SRMD was a member, A.B. is theosophist Annie Besant. Among Crowley's friends and allies Allen Bennett appears as Mahatera Phang, the dancer Isadora Duncan appears as Lavinia King, and her companion Mary D'Este, who helped Crowley write his magnum opus Magick: Book 4under her magical name Soror Virakam, appears as Lisa la Giuffria. Cyril Grey is Crowley himself, while Simon Iff is either an idealized version of an older and wiser Crowley or his friend Allen Bennett. Authors note dated London 1929 says This book was written in 1917, during such leisure as my efforts to bring America in the War on our side allowed me. Hence my illusions on the subject and the sad showing of Simon Iff at the end. Need I add that, as the book itself demonstrated beyond all doubt, all persons and incidents are purely the figment of a disordered imagination. Size: 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". Seller Inventory # 18519

About this Item: The Mandrake Press, 1929. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A REMARKABLE PRESENTATION COPY WITH ADDITIONAL ANNOTATIONS BY THE AUTHOR. CROWLEY, Aleister. Moonchild. A Prologue. London, The Mandrake Press, 1929. £6000 FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Original sea-green cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the pictorial Beresford Egan dust jacket almost completely intact, only upper part of dust jacket, covering head of spine, torn away. Text clean and crisp, flawless. An important presentation copy inscribed by the author on front endpaper: “To Clements Hassell with sincere admiration of a fine artist and appreciation of an excellent friend, from Aleister Crowley, Oct 8, ’32 e.v.”. Clements Hassell is likely to be identified with Hilary Clements Hassell (1871-1949), who was a British painter of interiors, landscapes and some coastal scenes. E.v. stands for ‘era vulgaris’, which is a Latin expression for “common era”. This is placed after the date to differentiate it from Crowley’s Thelemic calendar, which starts in 1904 (the date the author claimed he received the book of the law). On the rear endpaper appear in Crowley’s handwriting some details concerning a two-day schedule, accompanied by planetary symbols. These symbols represent days of the week (Mars, i.e. Tuesday, and Mercury, i.e. Wednesday). Crowley mentions meeting times, the name “Foyle” and “lunch at Grosvenor Ho.[use]”, where it is known he gave a lecture on Magick in 1932: “In September 1932 Crowley was invited to a literary luncheon by Christina Foyle. Christina Foyle’s owned Foyle’s bookshop in London and held a literary lunch every year. This was a small coup for Crowley, to be invited as the guest of honour and speaker. Crowley spoke on The Philosophy of Magick which was well received. A queue of women formed at the end of the luncheon to have him autograph their books.” Marlene Peckwood, The Feng Shui Journey of Mr Aleister Crowley, 2012, p. 205. Inscribed by Author(s). About this Item: The Mandrake Press, London, 1929. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Crowley's sought-after novel, freestanding despite the "Prologue" subtitle. Two board corners peeking through the cloth, and some fraying of the blue cloth to top of spine; call this firmly bound 1929 printing "good plus." Signed "Aleister Crowley" to the blank FFE, which (like the RFE) is moderately browned. Then, UNDER his name, the author has inscribed "To Bro Benn" (though the surname trails off, could conceivably be "Bennis" or "Benson," please see scans), "Trusting he will find in these pages the truths he so richly deserves / A" (inscription ends.) The letters "leis" of the author's first name are considerably darker than the rest of his name, and the ink there has bled slightly -- presumably that part of the page was slightly damp when signed. Small, symmetrical nitrate tape marks form a rectangle around this inscription -- possibly a card or piece of paper was once taped there to protect the inscription. Additionally, another previous owner has blindstamped her seal to bottom corner of this page, reading "MDS / Library of Diane Strom." There is a film and television actress of that name, born 1933, but we have no idea if it's the same Ms. Strom. Occult fiction; two magicians battle for the body of a young woman, whom one hopes will bear an ethereal being -- the Moonchild. 335 pp., "Printed and Made in Great Britain by the Crypt House Press, Limited / Gloucester and London.".
