The Stoic sect was founded by Zeno, about three hundred years before the Christian era, and flourished in great reputation till the declension of the Roman empire. This book is a summary view of the writings of Epictetus c. A.D. 55, born at Hierapolis in Phrygia, he was a slave at Rome for some time. About this Item: J.M. Dent & Sons / E.P. Dutton & Company, London & Toronto / New York, 1926. Hardcover. Condition: Very good plus. Nicholas Hornyansky (illustrator). [384pp, t.e.g.]: xxviii, 356; bound with patterned endleaves in gilt-embossed wine leatherette; 172 x 110 x 22 mm. Sixth printing of volume 404 in the Everyman's Library, edited by W.H.D. Rouse (originally 1910). With hand-printed bookplate on handmade paper, signed by the artist "Hornyansky". The etching is captioned "Among the Books / S.J. Lesco D.D.S." over a river scene with a man in a hat tending a beached canoe beside a teepee. The recipient, dental surgeon Stephen Joseph Lesco, has added an ink date beneath the plate: "Oct 9 - '30". Hornyansky (1896-1965) had only just emigrated to Canada (1929) making this one of his earliest Canadian commissions.
