(iv) 861pp. Purple pebbled cloth with gilt stamped design and lettering on the front cover and spine. Blind-stamped ruling and design on the back cover. Beveled edges. The book is a known and influential work codifying the rituals and practices and beliefs of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. The work is divided into 32 essays (chapters) discussing and examining various aspects esoteric philosophical underpinnings of the order. Much of this philosophy and belief is heverly influenced by other esoteric traditions throughout history, including the Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Rosicrucianism and the Hermetics. The beginning of each chapter contains a small engraving illustrating a certain aspect of the chapter's content. There are some occasionally other in text charters and figures. Binding with some rubbing and bumping to corners and along edges. Light scratch at the bottom of the back cover. Sunning to the spine and along the some of the edges of the covers. Interior with starting at the front free endpaper, p. 250 and 860. Book block tight overall. Binding in good, interior in overall very good condition. Albert Pike (1809 - 1891) was an American attorney, soldier, writer, and leading Freemason, in the Scottish Rite. Early in his life he'd spent some time as an adventurer, trapper, schoolteacher, journalist and newspaperman. In his military career he fought in the Mexican-American War, and during Civil War he rose to the rank of Brigadier-General for the Confederacy, commanding forces at the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862. As a Freemason, he became quite active and influential, developing rituals and writing "Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry". He was elected Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite's Southern Jurisdiction in 1859, and served in that position until his death in 1891. Bookseller Inventory # 42924
