Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Begun in the autumn of 1957 and published posthumously in 1964, Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast captures what it meant to be young and poor and writing in Paris during the 1920s. A correspondent for the Toronto Star, Hemingway arrived in Paris in 1921, three years after the trauma of the Great War and at the beginning of the transformation of Europe's cultural landscape: Braque and Picasso were experimenting with cubist forms; James Joyce, long living in self-imposed exile from his native Dublin, had just completed Ulysses; Gertrude Stein held court at 27 re de Fleurus and deemed young Ernest a member of une generation perdue; and T.S. Eliot was a bank clerk in London. It was during these years that the as of yet unpublished young writer gathered the material for his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, and the masterpieces that followed. Among these small, reflective sketches are unforgettable encounters with the members of Hemingway's slightly ragtag circle of artists and writers, some also fated to achieve fame and glory, others to fall into obscurity. A Moveable Feast is at once an elegy to the remarkable group of expatriates that gathered in Paris during the twenties and a testament to the risks and rewards of the writerly life.

Gray, marble patterned boards thirdbound in a brown cloth backstrip with gilt lettering on both the spine and the front board. Book has light bumping at the head and tail of the spine. Gilt lettering on the spine is beginning to fade, but is still gold in color and easy to read. Light rubbing at the tips of the four outside corners, and a trace of rubbing along the lower edges of the boards. Front board feels like it has a very faint curve to it. Army green colored endpapers. Binding is straight and tight. Pages have some foxing on the outside edge of the textblock, but are otherwise clean, white, and crisp. 211 pages. Gray publisher's topstain. Illustrated with a section of photographs. Dust Jacket - about 1/16" of the head of the spine has been chipped away, and there are a few 1/16" chips in the tail, all with some accompanying rubbing. 1/16" chip in the tips of the upper front outside and lower rear outside corners and light rubbing at the tips of all four outside corners. There is a 2" closed tear in the upper edge of the front cover with a couple accompanying wrinkles that fortunately fit into place well enough that the damage is not as intrusive as it would otherwise be. 1/4" chip in the upper edge of the rear cover next to the corner. Just a trace of rubbing along the upper and lower edges and a line of facial rubbing on the rear cover. Some foxing on the inside of the jacket; not visible from without. Original $4.95 price on the upper corner of the front inside flap. Book has seen some better days, but still a solid copy that presents pretty well. One of Hemingway's most widely read works.
