Item Description: Hogarth Press, London, 1925. Vanessa Bell (illustrator). First Edition.. Woolf, Virginia. MRS. DALLOWAY. London: Hogarth Press, 1925. "Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself". First Edition of Virginia Woolf's fourth novel. 8vo. 293 pp. A fine copy in rust cloth, one tiny minor tip bump, some minor scattered foxing to the edges, bright gilt titles to the spine in a stunning example of the Vanessa Bell designed dustwrapper with only small repair at the crown edge. "Anticipating criticism of Jacob's Room on the eve of its publication, Woolf wrote in her Diary that, "if they say all this is clever experiment, I shall produce Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street as the finished product".In the fall of 1922, the short story 'Mrs. Dalloway In Bond Street 'branched into a book' and Woolf began to think of the story as the first chapter of her new novel". Hussey, Mark. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A9a. Woolmer 82. Bookseller Inventory # 32499

Item Description: Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1925. First American edition. Octavo, original orange cloth. Light rubbing to the bottom cloth, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chips. One of the nicest examples of this title we have seen. "In Mrs. Dalloway Woolf breaks decisively with the fictional conventions of the realistic novel. The technique is almost orchestral, introducing and then interweaving the strains of the different characters' thoughts, and finally engineering, through a subtle sequence of readjustments and realignments, a new and delicate harmony between them at the close of the book. Mrs. Dalloway thus initiated Woolf's sequence of radical experiments with literary form, embodying a striking combination of fluid sympathy and secret resistance. Through the novel's rapid transitions between apparently disconnected, but secretly related stories, Woolf was able to suggest the hazards of neatly pigeonholing human character according to social situation or gender" (Parker, 110-11). Item Description: London: Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1925. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. One of 2,000 copies. Publisher's deep rust cloth, lettered in gilt. About near fine, with a touch of sunning to the spine, bright gilt, light rubbing to the edges, some light spotting to the page edges and scattered throughout the text block, otherwise fresh pages. A very handsome copy. Kirkpatrick A9a, Woolmer 82. One of the author's best known novels, Mrs. Dalloway tells the story of Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares to host a high-society party. The text is a compilation of two of Woolf's short stories "Mrs. Dalloway in Bond Street" and "The Prime Minister." A stream of consciousness narrative, Mrs. Dalloway follows the protagonist from her decision to "buy the flowers herself" at the start of the day through the completion of her party in the evening. Throughout the novel, Woolf explores the impact of mental illness on daily life, both in Mrs. Dalloway, who reveals that she is being treated for depression, and a second leading character, Septimus Warren Smith, a WWI veteran suffering from PTSD who chooses to commit suicide rather than face involuntary commitment to a psychiatric hospital. Like many of Woolf's novels, the text is centered on philosophy and perception rather than action sequences and dialogue; John W. Crawford agrees in his New York Times Review that "One day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway is the complete story of Mrs. Woolf's new novel, yet she contrives to enmesh all the inflections of Mrs. Dalloway's personality, and many of the implications of modern civilization, in the account of those twenty-four hours.". Item Description: The Dial Publishing Company, Greenwich, Connecticut, 1923. Softcover. Magazine. Small quarto. 104pp. Perfectbound wrappers. Typical wear to the yapped edges with a small chip at the heel of the spine, ex-library stamps on the front wrap, and dampstaining along the foredge, very good. This issue includes "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" by Virginia Woolf, the first in a series of short stories featuring her most well-known literary creation. The character had previously appeared in Woolf's first book, *The Voyage Out*, but was revisited some years later by the author in the stories and novel, *Mrs. Dalloway*. "Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street" was intended to be the first chapter of the 1925 novel, originally planned as a series of distinctly separate stories. Woolf chose instead to publish the story on its own and retain elements for the novel, which was ultimately a more unified narrative than her initial plan allowed. Bookseller Inventory # 343440

Item Description: Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1931. Hardcover. Book Condition: See description. Dust Jacket Condition: Dustjacket. 1st Edition. The first Uniform Edition, taken from within the 6th printing of the first American edition, denoted by a numeral 6 on the copyright page beneath the 1925 copyright date. A clean, square book, spine darkened and blue cloth lightly worn, in a likewise spine-darkened, somewhat soiled and chipped dustjacket. All four jacket corners are clipped, as issued; the price appears on the rear panel. A very good example. The sixth was the last printing in the author's lifetime. It was issued on January 29, 1931; the seventh printing didn't follow until 1948. The Uniform issue the only early Harcourt issue not to feature Vanessa Bell's dustjacket artwork, electing instead a simple (and cheaper) blue on cream design consistent with other titles issued in the Uniform Edition. (The seventh printing reverted to the Bell design.) If any later jackets were issued for this printing during the 17 years when it was current, this seems to be one of the earliest ones, giving the original price of $1.35 for volumes in the Uniform Edition. Any Dalloway dustjacket so early is scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 000267
