Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Stated First printing-Laurel Edition- Tight and unmarked with light crease on cover.More than a half-century ago the naturalist Farley Mowat was sent to investigate why wolves were killing arctic caribou. Mowat's account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone -- studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for the wolves (who were of no threat to caribou or man) -- is today celebrated as a classic of nature writing, at once a tale of remarkable adventures and indelible record of myths and magic of wolves.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine - Slight Chips. 1st.Canadian Edition. The author was sent by the Dominion Wildlife Service to the Barren lands of Keewatin to investigate the wolf population. This book is the entertaining account of his adventures there. His conviction that the wolves were much maligned as being a problem gained popular support for his contention that wolves be recognized as an integral part of the northern ecosystem. When challenged on the veracity of this book he commented. "I took some pride in having it known that I never let facts get in the way of a good story." 247p.Nivce clean copy of the first edition in 2nd. state book jacket by Frank Newfeld. Book.

Hard Cover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. First Edition, First Printing. Small octavo. Light blue cloth covered boards and spine with shiny gilt lettering on the spine. Book has very slight bumping at the head and tail of the spine and a light bump at the tip of the lower rear outside corner. White endpapers. Previous owner's name written on the front endpaper. Binding is straight and tight. Pages are all clean, white, and crisp. 247 pages. Tiny red dot on the lower edge of the textblock could be a publisher's remainder dot. Dust Jacket has some tiny chipping in the head and tail of the spine and a 1/8" chip in the tip of each of the outside corners. Some age spotting is mostly concentrated on the spine and some light evidence of handling over time. 1" closed tear in the upper edge of the front cover and a second in the upper edge of the rear cover, both of which fit together pretty tightly. Upper corner of the front inside flap has been price clipped. Not, by any means, a perfect copy, but neither is it unattractive. Decent copy of Mowat's classic. Basis for the 1983 Carroll film of the same title.

Hardcover. Condition: Good to Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: G (outer) & VG (inner). 1st Edition. In 1948-49 Mowat spent some time in the Canadian subarctic, on the Dominion Wildlife Service's dime, observing wolves in an effort to determine if they were responsible for declining caribou populations (spoiler alert: Mowat claims that they weren't). His writing about this project has been both scorned and lauded. This copy comes with both dust jackets, the first state an amusing illustration featuring a wolf with its left leg around Mowat's shoulder in a friendly embrace, the second state featuring a somewhat blandly generic photograph of Mowat. Apparently someone at M&S didn't think much of the first jacket (which is immeasurably better than the second), and ordered it redone. Grey cloth w/red spine lettering/wolf's head illustration, 247 pages. Mild cover warp, slightly cocked, gift inscription to previous owner. Outer (2nd state) dust jacket w/rubbing, edge/corner/spine end chipping, sunned (legible) spine, tape repair to reverse by previous owner to reattach rear flap to rear panel, foxing to reverse. Inner (1st state) dust jacket w/minor chipping to corners/spine ends, previous owner's tape repair to reverse of spine, some foxing to reverse. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Second state DJ by Frank Newfeld. Book has grey cloth covered boards with red text/ 2 wolf heads on spine. Spine ends are rubbed, fon gift dedication dated 1965 book is very slightly cocked. A 'Wolves Dwindling' newspaper article(1966) clipping by Roland Huntford laid in. Unclipped, unpriced, orange DJ bears a portrait of author by Ray Webber. It is the second first edition cover after the first issue with a picture of a playful wolf leaning on Mowat's back was deemed objectionable by the author. DJ has had some scotch tape repairs, is edge chipped with worn and scuffed extremities and has what I suspect is a price sticker scar at the base of the front flap. Digital images available on request. Bookseller's Inventory # 133470.
