First Edition Signed
First Edition. Author's Autograph Edition, signed by Maurice Parmelee. Copy 91 of an unspecified limitation, issued in advance of the first edition. xiv, 303 pp. Bound in publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering. Near Fine with fraying at head, light shelf wear, former owner's name written on front free endpaper. Rare in the trade in any early edition, let alone in this advance signed issue. The author was a distinguished economist, criminologist, sociologist, and diplomat before resigning from the American government in 1923 and spending the next few years traveling and writing on a variety of subjects including world politics and the topic of this book: the philosophy of nudism. It would reprinted numerous times as Nudism in Modern Life, eventually to be an albatross around his neck when he had returned to public life and ran afoul of Congressman Martin Dies, who accused him of political and moral subversion. A key text in the American nudist movement as well as the related yet slightly more ascetic gymnosophist movement.
