A booklet consisting of a title page & a 4-page essay by Carter Ratcliff, folded concertina-style, is tipped onto the inside front panel of the slipcase. 10 color plates of various sizes, 8 of them folding, are laid into a pocket on the rear panel. Fine in a very good slipcase.

Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - Jim Dine, der amerikanische Maler und Objekthersteller, hat zusammen mit seinen Weggenossen Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns und Claes Oldenburg die Kunstszene Amerikas der 60er Jahre um einiges verändert. Er ist ein wenig jünger als diese, fand aber - wie diese - seinen Ausgangspunkt beim amerikanischen abstrakten Expressionismus. Dessen irrationaler Raum und gestisch bewegte Fläche gaben ihm den Hintergrund für eine neue poetische Umdeutung der einfachen Dinge, der Werkzeuge und Utensilien der alltäglichen Umwelt. Vor diesen artifiziellen Grund gestellt, gehängt oder in ihn hineinverfügt, erhielten diese einfachen Dinge eine andersartige Qualifikation, die sie aus der ihnen gewöhnlichen Sphäre des Nützlichen und Bekannten in die des Poetischen und Unbekannten - und damit Staunenswerten und Wunderbaren - herüberholte. Jene sonderbare Magie des gewöhnlichen Dinges in seiner härtesten Materialität, die Marcel Duchamp entdeckt hatte und die dann in Dada und Surrealismus zu immer neuen Manipulationen mit den Dingen und Dingbildern führte, war auch für Jim Dine der Anstoss, das gewöhnliche Ding als poetisches Requisit einer inneren Landschaft zu begreifen und vorzuzeigen, - als dingliche Vegetation jener 'inscapes', von der die amerikanischen Maler seit Matte gern sprachen. An der Genremalerei der amerikanischen Pop-Art vorbei, fand Jim Dine seinen persönlichen Weg, die emotionale und meditative Weise der Erfahrung der Wirklichkeit wieder mit dem realen Ding zu verbinden und durch dessen direktes Zitat den Bezug zur konkreten Wirklichkeit unseres Alltags wieder fester zu machen. The book was published to accompany an exhibition from November 3 - December 2, 2000 at the Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. The black cover is a tad rubbed and there is a "sticker shadow" on the front lower left. The inside pages are neat and clean. The contents are a narrative written by Mr. Dine titled "Reconstructing the Dream Called ;North' ". It flows through the book, offset on facing pages by full color reproduction of a Dine piece. There are 12 in all. This is all printed on art quality paper. An unusual and attractive variation on the exhibition catalog form.
