Hardcover in original gilt-stamped & decorated red satin boards SIGNED & inscribed by artist Nino Caffé to second page & dated 1966, 1st Ed 1st Printing, illustrated in monochrome and with color plates mounted on heavy laid paper with introductory text by Greene, revised from its original appearance in 1953 in a small gallery publication by New York's Knoedler Gallery, satin boards show very minor shelf/edge wear with faint crease to front board, small Florence Art Gallery stamp to endpaper, boards slightly bowed, else a bright tight very nice signed copy (25865); sm ob 4to, illus. Signed by Artist.

First edition, signed presentation copy from the artist & subject Nino Caffè; oblong folio (220 x 290 mm.); black & white illustrations, 14 tipped-in colour plates with printed captions; publisher's watered silk cloth, gilt, slight splaying but overall very good. greene Something of a Greene curioso, albeit very much in line with the author's personal preoccupations and interests. Nino Caffè was an Italian painter who revelled, reverentially, in depicting members of the Roman Catholic clergy (referred to by Greene as 'blackbeetles') in often amusing or modestly intimate moments. The text by Greene originally appeared in December 1953 in pamphlet form, but this first edition in book form is considered one of the scarcest of Greene's works. Particularly pleasing thus inscribed by Caffè, in 1961. cf. Wise & Hill B43; cf. Wobbe A31.

First Thus. Oblong folio (22.5x30.5cm.); original full red illustrated moiré silk stamped in gilt; [14]pp. & 14 color plates mounted to thick cream card stock; text photographic illus. throughout. Text leaves a bit yellowed along extremities, minor soil spots to preliminaries, else Very Good or better. From the Library of Ben and Bernarda Shahn with their estate label to front pastedown. Greene's introductory text first published in pamphlet form in 1953, though some of the paintings represented here are dated as late as 1959.

An earlier version of Graham Greene's appreciation of Italian painter Nino Caffè, 'the painter of young priests', had previously appeared in the catalogue for Caffè's exhibition at the Knoedler Gallery in New York in 1953. Text in English, Italian and French. An uncommon Graham Greene title. Miller 5 (for the 1953 exhibition catalogue). Oblong quarto. 14 tipped in colour plates and black and white illustrations in the text. Original red satin boards, titles to spine and front board gilt, decoration to front board gilt, bevelled edges. Small white stain to tail of spine and front board, cloth with a few tiny chips, mainly affecting rear board, light spotting to endpapers, else contents bright. An excellent copy.

First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the artist on the second leaf, "Alla Signora Luciana Tartaglia cordiale omaggio di Nino Caffe Primo Maggio [?] 1967. Text in English, Italian and French. An uncommon Graham Greene title. The true first edition with introductory text by Graham Greene (revised from its original appearance in 1953 in a small gallery publication by New York's Knoedler Gallery) and with new illustrations.
