Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. A Fine copy in like dust jacket, becoming increasingly scarce in this condition. Book with the silver spine gilt fresh and unrubbed. Previous owner's bookplate on the front paste-down and a penciled name written on the front free end paper. Unclipped dust jacket with slight rubbing at the base of the spine and a small scuff on the lower panel, otherwise fresh and whole, without chips or tears. An excellent copy overall. The final work of fiction published in the author's lifetime, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and cited by the Nobel Prize Committee, The Old Man and the Sea cemented Hemingway's legacy as one of the greatest American writers of the twentieth century. The story follows the tribulations of an aging and suddenly unlucky fisherman, Santiago, as he tries to catch a gigantic marlin in the Straits of Florida. Ultimately, Santiago's story is an existential metaphor through which Hemingway explored in a seemingly simple way the dignity and biblical nature of an old man's trials at the end of life. It was a massive success. The book was originally published in full in an issue of Life Magazine, which subsequently sold 5 million copies in less than a week. "No outbursts of spite or false theatricalism impede the smooth rush of its narrative. Within the sharp restrictions imposed by the very nature of his story Mr. Hemingway has written with sure skill. Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else" (contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine dust jacket.

First edition of Hemingway's most popular novel, the last sustained work of fiction in his lifetime. On the bestseller list for half a year, the book no only silenced those who had lambasted Across the River and into the Trees, but earned its author the Pulitzer Price and the Nobel. Hemingway was sure that The Old Man and the Sea would "get rid of the school of criticism that I am through as a writer." John Dos Passos agreed later saying that the phenomenal success of The Old Man and the Sea "was like a magician's stunt" Hanneman A24a Sea blue full cloth boards, Hemingway's signature blind-stamped at front board. First edition of Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and one of his most famous works. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Photograph of Hemingway by Lee Samuels. Housed in a custom clamshell slipcase. An exceptional example. Upon its publication in 1952 by Charles Scribner's Sons, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The novel reinvigorated Hemingway's literary reputation. It initiated a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novel was received with such alacrity, that it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Indeed, the publisher even wrote on an early dust jacket, calling the novel a "new classic," and it was compared by many critics to such revered works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

Condition: Poor. Advance Issue. Rare advance galley proof measuring 9" x 32". Originally distributed as seventeen recto sheets stapled at the top left corner and then folded at center into 9" x 16". The text of story is presented in a single wide column down length of the full sheets. A rather unique, though simple design for a rather important story. Cover page with titles has been shred from prior shattered frame; missing pieces with majority of titles available to be piece together. Second page is much better and remaining are good or very good. Back cover blank leaf is torn, worn. Middle section remains bound with original staple. Main issue is missing pieces from cover page and its assembly or restoration. The title or cover page is stamped: "Advance Galley Proofs." It is common for the first and last sheets to be detached. It is estimated there were only 500 advance proofs printed and distributed across the country in an effort for advance reviews. (After several professional confirmations, it does appear there were not 5,000 printed as some erroneously cite.) Few of this fragile item have survived and complete sets are rare. This is the first ever publication of The Old Man and the Sea and is prior to the LIFE magazine issue of September 1, 1952. The Charles Scribner first printing followed both with an initial print run of 50,000. One of Hemingway's greatest and most appreciated works, he was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature in May, 1953. He was cited "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style." Hemingway dedicated the prize to the Cuban people. Celebrated in twentieth century fiction and in Hemingway's canon, reaffirming his worldwide literary prominence. The last novel Ernest Hemingway saw published, "The Old Man and the Sea" has proved itself to be an enduring work of American fiction. The story of an old Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal: a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Using simple, powerful language as a fable, Hemingway takes the timeless themes of courage in the face of defeat and personal triumph won from loss, and transforms them into a magnificent 20th-century classic. Insured post. Book.
