Item Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1957, 1957. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and upper board in white. With the dust jacket. Housed in a quarter red morocco box. Spine a little rolled but an excellent copy in the slightly creased and lightly frayed dust jacket. First edition, first printing, presentation copy to Pieter W. Fosburgh and his wife Liza, inscribed by the author in red crayon, "To Peter [sic] and Liza Fosburgh, Writing in red crayon in memory of the Red House, Jack Kérouac [sic] (Idiot) (St. Jack of the Germs)" [the last five words in pencil]. A fascinating presentation. Pieter Whitney Fosburgh (1915–1978), author of the proto-conservationist book, The Natural Thing: the Land and its Citizens (New York: Macmillan, 1959), was editor of New York State's Department of Conservation magazine. As his middle name indicates he was descended through his mother from the socially prominent Whitney family of Massachusetts. His brothers James and Hugh were also naturalists, art critics, writers, and artists. After Pieter's death his widow Liza lived in Cherry Plain, New York, and wrote children's books. The reference to "the Red House" must surely be to the large redbrick St Louis School in the Centralville section of Lowell, Massachusetts, the elementary school which Kerouac attended from April 1929 through the fourth grade. Item Description: The Viking Press, New York, 1957. First Edition. Kerouac, Jack. ON THE ROAD. Signed. New York: Viking Press, 1957. 8vo., 310pp. A very good or better copy, the white spine lettering partially rubbed, evidence of a bookplate having been removed from the front free endpaper otherwise the book block is clean & free of blemish. Kerouac has signed in black ink at the top of the second blank page which has likely been added later to this copy. Notwithstanding it is indeed signed & as such not to be toyed with as there are only a handful of really top-of-mind modern titles & right beside Catcher & Mockingbird sits OTR or is it the other way round? The dustwrapper is very good or better having been professionally restored with work done primarily at the spine heel & crown. An extremely good copy. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 30936

Item Description: The Viking Press, New York, 1957. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Kerouac, Jack. ON THE ROAD. New York, 1957, The Viking Press, First American Edition. 310 pages. First edition of Jack Kerouac¿s most famous work. That well-loved, wildly exuberant, often funny account of a journey through America and Mexico, Jack Kerouac's On the Road instantly defined a generation following its publication in 1957: it was, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, "the clearest and most important utterance yet made by the ¿beat generation¿ Kerouac himself named years before. Kerouac in 1950 outlined the "Essentials of Spontaneous Prose" and decided to tell the story of his years on the road with Neal Cassady as if writing a letter to a friend in a form that reflected the improvisational fluidity of jazz. In a letter to a student in 1961, Kerouac wrote: "Dean and I were embarked on a journey through post-Whitman America to FIND that America and to FIND the inherent goodness in American man. It was really a story about 2 Catholic buddies roaming the country in search of God. And we found him." Allen Ginsberg described the work as "spontaneous bop prosody, Kerouac's novel remains electrifying in its thirst for experience and its defiant rebuke of American conformity. On the Road has become a classic with its stream-of-consciousness depiction of the rejection of mainstream American values set in a physical and metaphysical journey across America" (Book in America, 136). This copy is the 1957 true First Edition. With title page date of 1957 and "Published in 1957 by the Viking Press, Inc. 625 Madison Avenue, New York 22" on the copyright page. With Copyright of 1955, 1957 by Jack Kerouac. Dustjacket with Bill English's abstract rectangular drawings in blue, red, and black on the front panel and the spine, printed in bands of blue and red on the rear panel, with a 22-line excerpt "From ON THE ROAD:" on the rear panel. Only 7,500 copies were printed so it is quite scarce. Finely woven black cloth stamped brightly in white on the front boards and the spine. A clean, tight copy. Near Fine condition in a Near Fine DJ, appearing unread, quite scarce in this condition. NZ$9,000. Bookseller Inventory # 000231

(p 8). Black cloth with title in white on cover and flawless text in white on spine. Bookseller Inventory # 62

Item Description: Viking, NY, 1957. Octavo. (iv) 310pp. First edition. Author's second book, which stands quite firmly as the quintessential work of beat literature. The subject of Kerouac's rhapsodic novel is well-known, as are the stories surrounding its composition, and the mixed bag of critical response to its publication. What is less often cited is Kerouac's intended audience, which Ann Charters reveals in her bibliography: in a later interview, he admits that the book was written for his second wife "to tell her what I'd been through. It's directed toward a woman . it's sexy because it's addressed to a woman." Fine and bright in black cloth stamped in white, and with unrestored dust wrapper which shows a few tiny nicks and a couple of small closed tears at extremities. (Charters A2.a). Item Description: Viking, 1957. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Jack Kerouac (1957) ‘On the Road’. From the estate of Lord Birdwood, a US first edition, first printing published by Viking. First state dust jacket priced USD 3.95, and with the blue and red edge stripes as called for. Also, Jack Kerouac’s signature on a cheque written for Schlossmann’s in New York for the amount of USD 247.64 dated 19 August 1958. Whatever Kerouac paid for with this cheque, the funds certainly stemmed from the ‘On The Road’ royalties. We are very proud to be able to offer this book together with this cheque as this makes it one of very few copies on the market with an authentic laid in signature. Condition: The book is in near fine condition in a very good, unrestored dust jacket. The book has no lean; no foxing to the pages; no tears; no major rubbing. The white lettering on the spine is vibrant and not rubbed out as often seen. The top stain is burgundy-red. The iconic and fragile black boards usually unforgivingly show every single rub and dusting. As can be seen in the pictures, the black boards are very clean. There is a slight push to the upper front corner. On the front free end paper (ffep) there is the previous owner’s signature: ‘Birdwood’ (see below). The dust jacket is unrestored and in very good condition with slight edge wear. We see the typical fraying and minor chipping to the folds and a couple of close tears. However, there is no minor loss, it is NOT price clipped, and the reverse shows the jacket clean and white (very unusual) without any foxing or discolouration. The American dust jackets from the 50s and early 60s are very fragile and copies with perfect wrappers are exceptionally scarce. At best they are described as “near fine which has benefited from restoration by a paper conservationist”. This dust jacket was not touched by any restorer and is nevertheless well preserved. Lord Mark William Ogilvie Birdwood, 3rd Baron Birdwood was a member of the House of Lords, and expert on defence. Whilst usually previous owner’s signatures/ marks are considered a flaw, this is not the case here as the previous owner is clearly not an ordinary person, and if the signature does not add any significant value it should not decrease it either. Birdwood, whilst an undergraduate, together with five fellow Cambridge students, “drove from London to Nepal in a Land Rover, an expedition that took them across Europe and through Turkey, Persia and Afghanistan.” It does not come as a surprise why Birdwood owned a first edition copy of ‘On the Road’, cherished it, and kept in such a remarkable condition!. Item Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1957. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Publisher's cloth, black dust jacket. A very good copy, with light wear to the spine ends and the front board, minor rubbing to the edges and corners, a light crease to the spine, otherwise a very clean and fresh copy; in a first issue unclipped dust jacket, with light wear to the hinges, minor chipping to the extremities, slight scuffing to rear panel, and very light rubbing to the front panel. Overall, an attractive copy without significant wear, which is most endemic to this title. On the Road is Kerouac's second novel and certainly his most renowned. Before its release in 1957, sections of On the Road were published as articles in a variety of literary magazines and were received well by audiences, prompting the publishers to describe the first complete edition as "a publishing event of no small interest." Today, On the Road is best known as the novel that made Jack Kerouac famous and it remains popular with younger generations. In this work, Kerouac describes his years traveling the United States and Mexico with his friend Neal Cassady in their youthful search for adventure, excitement, and knowledge of self in stream-of-consciousness prose that is as captivating as the story itself. Kerouac wrote the bulk of this novel in three weeks on a singular 120-foot-long scroll and spent years editing and revising it before its publication in 1957. Bookseller Inventory # JK034
