Intima Press (illustrator). miniature book (92 x 69 x 44 mm), the box is (165 x 102 x 69 mm). dos-à-dos binding with Suminagashi marbled edges. Letterpress printed cotton paper covers commissioned from Saint Armand Paperie, Canada. unpaginated. With 'The Tragedy of Desdemona' by Mindy Bellof. "I am the one whom they call Life, and you have called Death. I am the one whom you have pursued, and I am the one whom you have seized. I am the one whom you have reflected upon, and you have scorned me." - Thunder, Perfect Mind, Nag Hammadi, 4th-century First edition limited to 37 copies, of which this is one of 26 standard lettered copies signed by the printer / artist, Mindy Belloff. A fine copy in fine clamshell box. Designs, printing, drawings, typography, marbling, and binding by Mindy Belloff. Letterpress printed from photopolymer plates produced at Boxcar Press, NY. From the artist's website: "This new edition from Intima Press, four years in the making, is a double-bound miniature pairing of a classic 17th century Shakespearean story, The Tragedy of Othello, with commentary and quoted statistics compiled by the artist in The Tragedy of Desdemona. By magnifying the plight of abused women and enaging in dialogue with the text of Othello as cultural critique, the Desdemona tragedy highlights issues of patriarchy and gender bias throughout centuries, while giving voice to women who have been silenced. Though small in size, this edition is not less significant. The work continues to challenge traditional subject matter in fine press printing, with essential historic and contemporary viewpoints, helping to redefine contemporary artists' contributions to the history of the book. Voices: William Shakespeare's Othello, based on a 16th-century tale in Giraldi Cinthio's Gli Hecatommithi, was a popular play in Elizabethan England, which still resonates today. The story begins with devotional love, an elopement, and hope for the future, interrupted by the machinations of the villain Iago, and ends in tragedy within a few days. The character of Othello, a General in the military who marries the young Lady Desdemona, becomes intensely jealous and eventually murders her, parallels a modern Othello-the sports and television personality O.J. Simpson, who was accused of the double murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. Both are tragic stories of jealous rage, domestic violence, male dominance, upper class privilege, and femicide. In The Tragedy of Desdemona, closing arguments of the legal case and diary entries of the victim are revisited, along with historic and contemporary poetry, writings from the 4th-century Nag Hammadi codices, excerpts of writings from Ovid, Dostoevsky, and Alice Walker, current news headlines, global statistics on femicide, the 2021 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe, the 1993 case of Lorena Bobbitt, and the myth of Medusa, among other information. Soft you. A word or two before you go. Speak of me as I am. Of one that loved not wisely, but too well. - Othello I loved her; always have and always will. If we had a problem, its because I loved her so much. - O.J. Dos-à-Dos Binding & video montage: The two volumes are paired, Othello on one side, Desdemona on the other, sharing the same spine-a parallel with Iago's description of marital conjugation of the beast with two backs-as the two texts and various voices are conjoined in dialogue and are inseparable. The layered narrative continues with a video component. When opened, one views a montage of images including short clips from film and theater productions of Othello (Orson Welles, Laurence Fishburne, Anthony Hopkins, Eamonn Walker, Laurence Olivier, and Placido Domingo), news headlines of sensational stories from the mid-1990's, recent women's marches around the #MeToo movement and Supreme Court rulings, and other poignant stories and global statistics. The video functions as a time capsule, of a generation coming of age in the 1970's-90's ( 8:44 minutes). Beautifully composed pages printed letterpress on a Vandercook Universal III Automatic A/B press, front and verso, in two different shades of browns and reds, the design of an 'O' is repeated on each page, with pages adorned with over 50 original drawings. Othello: Full text in its entirety, typeset in Adobe Luminari, 192-pages printed on Mohawk Superfine text weight papers. Desdemona: Typeset in Adobe Jenson Pro, 150-pages printed on Johannot Arches cotton rag papers. Six women are killed by men every hour in a global pandemic of femicide - United Nations, 2020. A percentage of sales from this edition will be donated to help support victims of domestic violence. Belloff, Mindy (illustrator). Near-miniature. Two volumes, bound do-à-dos. (192); (150)pp. One of twenty-six copies, signed by the artist. Original drawings reproduced throughout. A significant archival and multimedia undertaking, Belloff's compilation sets back to back (or as a beast with two backs) the text of Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice" and her own "Tragedy of Desdemona," an editorial album of texts and images, including ancient Nag Hammadi poetry, passages from Ovid, Dostoevsky, and Alice Walker, statistics gathered from databases and news media, the 2021 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe, and Belloff's own musings. The book hinges, literally, on the realities of violence against women, and how that violence can become co-opted by racialized discourse, skewing the focus away from the issue at hand and wielding the real perils of womanhood as a weapon of ulterior agendas. To articulate this phenomenon, Belloff incisively parallels the tale of Othello (a character canonically, if problematically, read as Black) and Desdemona (a white woman) with the O.J. Simpson trial. Excerpts from the trial and its reportage are interspersed among the other material of "The Tragedy of Desdemona," but the most immediate mirroring of the two events is presented in the accompanying video card, in which an 8:44-minute video interstitializes scenes from dramatic interpretations of Othello with scenes surrounding the Simpson spectacle, including the iconic Ford Bronco chase. The two books and video card together are a spectacle unto themselves, one which grapples with the multiplicity of forces at play in situations of violence against women, and with how we talk about those forces in the first place. Book bound in letterpress-printed paper covers, with Suminagashi-marbled edges. Video card with LCD screen at 2x4 inches and 320x240 resolution. Video automatically plays when card is opened. Housed in custom box, which has two internal compartments, one with the charging cable for the video card, and another with the video credits. Fine.
