BEARD, PETER: Zara's Tales: Perilous Escapades in Equatorial Africa Knopf 2004 First Edition ISBN 0679426590 SIGNED with Beard's four fingertips on the front dustjacket, and the note "Special Delivery to the inestimable Sierra XX and Lots of Love from Peter Beard, Hog Ranch, Nairobbery." On the pictorial front free endpaper he signed "Peter Beard Hog Ranch Nbi". He added his print of four fingertips again on the page with the dik-dik photograph. Beard hand-corrected a typo on the last page of the book, changing "best" to "beast". That makes four pages on which Peter Beard left his personal imprint. A color photo of the author signing the book at the 12/08/04 event at the University of Minnesota's Bell Museum, in the year of publication, and a brochure of the event is included. "From adventurer, explorer, photographer, writer, pied piper Peter Beard-eleven irresistible tales, told to his daughter Zara in his tented encampment at Hog Ranch, Kenya, about life, about living, about Africa." Peter Beard lived a storied, full life and made his mark early and often. Signed with love to this book collector's young daughter.

Published on the occasion of the 1999 exhibition Peter Beard: Fifty Years of Portraits, curated by Peter T. Tunney, at the Fahey/Klein Gallery, Los Angeles. Out of print. Very scarce. Fine. A Near Mint copy. From the publisher: "Throughout his remarkable life, photographer, naturalist, and raconteur Peter Beard has befriended and photographed some of the most prominent figures of our times. Portraiture is woven into the fabric of all of Beard's work, yet to date this relationship has never been carved out and explored. From his earliest attempts at expression as a child to the mania for travel and adventure that overtook Beard as a young man, and onward to Beard's most recent work on assignment, portraiture is a central thread of Beard's career. Beard's 'portraits,' however, rarely conform to the traditional format of this genre. Instead, they embody spontaneity, the moments shared with intimate friends, and the adventurous lives and experiences to which he has long been attracted. A vital chronicler of our times, he has created memorable images of such icons as Picasso, Francis Bacon, Karen Blixen, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Salvador Dali, and Mick Jagger, along with the last great safari hunters, such as J.A. Hunter, Phillip Percival, and Cape-to-Cairo Grogan." Signed by Author.

Cloth in Pictorial Dust Jacket. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. 164pp, 115 b&w and 80 color illustrations. Designed by Virginia Tan. "The Art of the Maasai" presents for the first time three hundred extraordinary ceremonial artifacts - discovered by Gillies Turle and never before seen outside the villages to which they belong - that were created over many generations by members of the Maasai tribe of Kenya. What makes their discovery particularly exciting is that high art has been found in a part of the world in which, until now, it was believed no art had ever been created. The ceremonial objects brought together here are extraordinary, and Peter Beard's photographs of them are in themselves works of art. This is a book whose publication is an event in the worlds of art and African culture". A brand new, most handsome example of the 1992 Alfred A. First edition of this classic monograph. Quarto, original leatherette cover. illustrated throughout. Elaborately signed and inscribed by Peter Beard in the year of publication, with his left hand imprint added. In fine condition, bookplate opposite the inscription. Preface by Peter T. Tunney and with an introduction by David Fahey. Essay by Anthony Haden-Guest. In this book cataloguing 50 years of Peter Beard's photography, essayist Peter Tunney offers an interesting perspective on Beard's work: "Above all, Peter Beard is a collector, the camera only one method to his madness, a mere tool for accumulating his relished subject matter, the evidence of a life lived, all stuffed into a diary, or any book for that matter. Peter once remarked to me, 'I never save a book unless I have something glued in it.'" Beard's photos are collages of lists, of reference points; when he shows in a gallery, he insists that a mixed tape of music is played to amplify and add a layer of sound to his pictures. The texture in his photo collages is rich, and the layers are thick. The elements he employs create a whole vision of his work: Africa, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, the Kennedys, elephants, Montauk, Mick Jagger, blood, crocodiles, things cut out of their context and put in new ones--the picture begins to form. Fifty years' worth of work is collected in this book, expressed in faces readers may recognize and some they won't; his adventures; and his years at Hog Ranch in Africa. Somehow these diverse points of reference come together in their differences and illustrate completely Peter Beard's fascinating work and life.

First Edition. Wonderful signed presentation copy from photographer Peter Beard. Beard took his left hand and wrist, dipped it in blood red and metallic gold acrylic paint, and placed it on the title page giving a terrific textured handprint. Around the handprint Beard has inscribed by the author: ÒSalaams & warmest regards. To Susan XOXOXOX, Peter Beard, Box 603 Montauk. Bahat Kubwa.Ó The front free endpaper has been neatly spread, thus making the title page signature and artwork all the more dramatic at first opening. There are some spatterings of red and gold paint on the front pastedown with a 4Ó x 5Ó black & white photograph by Peter Beard affixed to the lower left corner of an aerial shot of what appears to be an animalÕs skeleton on an African river bank. A photograph self-portrait is affixed to the front board of this brown leatherette crimson stamped coffee table book. Fine copy without dust jacket as issued. An amazing collection of BeardÕs photographs turned into color collages using paint, handwriting, and textured objects. Contains many images of his passionate interest in African culture, landscape, and wild life, and includes images by him (in some cases several each) of many notables including Isak Dinesen, Truman Capote, Andy Warholm Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, Bianca Jagger, Maude Adams, Francis Bacon, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, etc. A remarkable book of striking imagery and sometimes tragic beauty. Scarce in a presentation copy and especially so done in such an artistic and striking way.
