Founded by Hubbard after his 'bitter experience with the New England intellectual and literary elite,' the Philistine was at first intended as a 'one-off jibe at the establishment.' (MacLeod: American Little Magazines of the 1890s). Published through the Roycrofters community in New York, the magazine eventually became a vehicle for Hubbard to express his political and cultural views, while incorporating the Arts and Crafts aesthetic popular at the time, into printing and layout.
