PICTORIAL GUIDE TO THE LAKELAND FELLS Book Two The Far Eastern Fells. Alfred Wainwright. Westmorland Gazette, Kendal. 53rd Impression Cover price £3.00. Illustrated Hardback. Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991) will forever be remembered for his famous Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells which he compiled between 1952 and 1966. These handwritten and hand-drawn works of art have given inspiration to all true fellwalkers for the past forty years. For this labour of love, as he called it, he was awarded the MBE. Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides are a publishing phenomenon reprinted many times they are notoriously difficult to date as they invariably did not give reprint dates or a publishing history but as they are bought by walkers keen to explore and learn more of the landscape that they were passing through. This copy is in FINE condition in green faux morocco boards with gilt titling to the spine. The stock is tight and bright with no inscriptions, markings or marginalia, in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper. Hardback in dustwrapper, bound in the original boards with printed titling to spine and front. 18 × 12cm, unpaginated. The North Western Fells are bounded by the River Derwent and the River Cocker - an area lauded by A. Wainwright as first-class fell-walking territory. The ridge walking here is some of the finest in the Lake District, offering views of unsurpassed beauty. There is something for all walkers: steep, high mountains such as Grasmoor, rugged individualists such as Castle Crag, and destinations such as Catbells, which Wainwright calls 'a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together, a place beloved'. Item Description: Henry Marshall, 1955. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, second impression, of Wainwright’s first guide - significantly, the first appearance of the iconic dustwrapper (omitted from the first printing on the grounds of economy). A Very Good+ copy, clean and tightly bound, free of inscriptions and markings; the gilt has worn from the text to the cover and the edge of the page block is tanned. The unclipped and unpriced dustwrapper (price sticker shadow to front flap) is generally a little worn and aged, the green colouring is somewhat faded and there are light splash marks, particularly to the rear panel. Presents well in a removable, archival-quality Brodart protective cover. An attractive example of an uncommon and significant issue. All orders are carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Bookseller Inventory # 356
