FINE/FINE. hardcovers. all still within the publisher plastic covering. unopened. contents volume is obviously unread and crisp. delightful condition/gift quality. First Thus. 8vo. 7.75"x5.5". Maroon cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on spine and cover. Pictorial dust jacket. 30 full color illustrated plates by Maurice Sendak. 449 pp This is a limited edition restored text of Melville's controversial follow-up to Moby-Dick (Melville referred to Pierre as "the Kraken," a weightier novel than his previous "white whale"). This edition has 30 new illustrations by the great Sendak and redacts the several chapters that Melville later added to spite his publisher, in which Pierre, apropos of nothing, reveals that he is also a writer and despises the publishing industry. Originally released to visiously negative reviews, this gothic, psychosexual novel has found many defenders in modern literary criticism, particularly in its original form as presented here. From the personal collection of a dealer/collector. Harper Collins,

A handsomely bound First Edition (so stated) signed for Parrish Books by the late Maurice Sendak on the half-title page on February 1, 2004 at his home in Connecticut. This Kraken edition represents the text that Herman Melville submitted to the Harper & Brothers publishers in 1852 but which they were hesitant to publish because of the bad reviews being given to "Moby Dick." It took Melville scholar Hershel Parker and Maurice Sendak, long a Melville fan, to bring this edition to light. Sendak told us that it was his goal to ensure that Melville's "other" work received the attention that Melville as an author deserved. In fine dark red cloth with a fine dark green colorful dustjacket, the Sendak illustrations are disturbing but superb. Protected by an archival dustjacket. Maurice Sendak has been awarded countless awards for illustration of children's books, including the Caldecott Medal, 1964 (for Where the Wild Things Are); Hans Christian Andersen International Medal, 1970; Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, 1983; Jewish Cultural Achievement Award, 1988; National Medal of Arts, 1996. HarperCollins, New York, NY, U.S.A., 1995. Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine in Archival Plastic Cover. Sendak, Maurice (illustrator). First Edition.
