Pierrette Bloch (1928-2017) est une peintre et sculptrice franco-suisse qui élabora toute sa vie un art pétri de subtilité. N?appartenant à aucun champ esthétique, très indépendante, elle installa un rythme, un balancement entre le vide et le plein, une dialectique entre le noir et le blanc laissé en réserve, neigeux. Elle créa des ensembles d?oeuvres avec des moyens raréfiés, des formes élémentaires (points, lignes, entrelacs, boucles, mailles.), des sortes d?écriture dépourvues de sens, des « alphabets secrets », comme le proposait Frédéric Edelmann en 1978. Elle a pratiqué le dessin (mine de plomb, craie, pastel, fusain), le collage, la peinture sur papier, la sculpture, notamment avec l?utilisation de fils de crins entortillés sur des lignes de nylon. Ses formats sont souvent excentriques, très petits, par exemple, ou démesurément allongés ? pouvant atteindre une dizaine de mètres pour quelques centimètres seulement de largeur. Il y a de la musicalité et une infinie poésie dans l?oeuvre de Pierrette Bloch qui a pu être rapprochée de celles des Supports / Surfaces, de Cy Twombly ou de Henri Michaux. Elle travailla à Paris dans son atelier de la rue Antoine-Chantin, de 1954 à son décès, et dans sa maison méditerranéenne à Bages, près de Narbonne. Dans la simplicité, la singularité de Pierrette Bloch est de conjuguer un semblant d?ordre, un vocabulaire densifié et un chaos qui n?exclut pas l?humour. Le fil ténu y côtoie la tache d?encre. Pierrette Bloch était une proche du couple Soulages. Pierre Soulages, qui la rencontra en 1949 dans son atelier de la rue Schoelcher, à Paris, l?a dépeinte en 2018 comme « l?amie de toute une vie ». Ce témoignage de fidélité est la raison pour laquelle cette exposition, loin d?être une rétrospective - celle-ci se tiendra au printemps 2025 au musée d?art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne -, prend place dans le cadre des célébrations du Dixième anniversaire du musée Soulages, Rodez se déroulant en 2024. Les oeuvres de Pierre Soulages léguées par Pierrette Bloch au Centre Pompidou ? musée national d?art moderne seront présentées à cette occasion. Ces oeuvres des années 1950, peintures sur toile ou sur papier, sont restées accrochées dans son salon parisien pendant près de soixante-dix ans, manifestant avec constance la proximité amicale des deux artistes. Discrete Series est un titre emprunté au poète objectiviste américain George Oppen que l?artiste plasticienne appréciait particulièrement. Ce titre, qui date de 1934, fait référence à une série mathématique aux termes « chacun empiriquement dérivé, chacun empiriquement vrai. » Empirisme, travail sériel, discrétion à tous les sens du terme, tous ces points résonnent avec l?oeuvre et la personnalité de Pierrette Bloch. La cinquantaine de pièces exposées, issues du musée de Grenoble, du musée Fabre de Montpellier, du Fonds de Dotation Pierrette Bloch et de collections particulières, témoigneront de cette production sérielle, autour de sept ensembles caractéristiques de l?artiste : I- Collages bleus de 1971. II- Lignes d?encre de 1995. III- Dessins saturés de 1997. IV- Fil de crin des années 1980. V- Pages d?écriture de 1986. VI- Dessins à gros points de 1996. VII- Ensemble de papiers asiatiques de 2006.
