Half bound in natural calf leather with Spanish pattern (?) marbled paper over boards, gilt overlaid veins on covers; pseudo raised bands on spine with extra gilt stamped floral and vine designs in compartments and with gilt stamped titles on red and brown spine panels; all edges marbled in Spanish pattern; end papers match cover marbling; tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait in each volume. Bright, clean, square covers and spines; light edge rubbing - board just exposed at one fore corner; spine title panel chipped of volume 2 - titles still present; leather remains supple; tightly bound; owner bookplate on front pastedowns; light, clean interior with some age darkening at page edges. A very handsome set. Small 8vos, 1,227 total pp (clxiii, 168, 311, 363, lxxii, 150).

Initially imported from Edinburgh and issued with new titles, Bell's Poets of Great Britain was intended to provide attractive and portable works of British poets 'from Chaucer to Churchill', sold both individually and together as a 109-volume set. Bell's first London-printed Pope appeared in 1786, followed by the present edition a year later. Provenance: from the library of Sir Stephen Gaselee (18821943), civil servant, scholar, Pepys Librarian at Magdalene College Cambridge, President of the Bibliographical Society, and a donor to the University Library; thence by descent.
