About this Item: Pan Books Ltd, London, 1957. Softcover. Condition: Good. Photographic (illustrator). First Edition. At the beginning of the text there is a double page map showing the area which "Popski" and his private army ranged. Popski: an appreciation by Brigadier J. W. Hackett, introduction by author and at the rear roll of honour and awards garnered by Popski and his men. The text is illustrated with four pages of black-and-white photographs, and the occasional map. Colour illustrated paperback binding with black coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the back strip. Black and white photograph of author to the rear panel. The memoirs of the author, who during World War II, convinced the Allied command in Egypt to allow him to form his own small mobile unit, to fight deep behind enemy lines; which he did successfully both in North Africa and Italy. This is his story. This book is old and a little fragile, as has been in the sun and the glue is somewhat suspect. Minor creasing of the book corners with rubbing of the book edges and panels. Reading creases and sunning to the back strip with light her sunning to the book panels. Browning and foxing of the text block edges and to the rear panel. Foxing has also occurred to the pages. Results of an insect borrowing can be seen to the top left-hand corner of the text block which fades out at page 45 - please see photograph foxing to the end pages and previous owners name to the top left-hand corner of the half title page. Previous owner has made some notes to the top edge of the rear panel. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. In October 1942, with the sanction of the British Army, Vladimir "Popski" Peniakoff (1897-1951) formed his own elite fighting force. By befriending and enlisting desert Arabs, he was able to penetrate deep into German territory without being detected - over the next year "Popski's Private Army" carried out a series of raids behind the German lines that were truly spectacular. Original red buckram binding, with black titles. A bit of wear to the corners and tips.
