About this Item: Tasche, New York, 1997. Paperback. Condition: Very Good+. 5 1/2 x 71/2, 576 pgs, sepia photo reproductions. The 81 sepia prints contained within are part of Curtis's monumental work of 2500 photographs. His immense project, while well-known, was not widely viewed before his death, because the size of the original sets were so large that they quickly disappeared into rare book rooms and institutions, out of easy reach even for scholars. The publication of this size of book made Curtis available for view by the larger audience. Seller Inventory # 29461

About this Item: Promontory Press, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1992. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket as Issued. Curtis, Edward S. (illustrator). First Thus. There are several smaller and many less expensive versions of North American Indian photographs by Edward S. Curtis (b. 1869, d. 1952). This publication is rather special for its size, quality of photographic printing, and expert textual commentary. The book's size is approximately 15" high x 19" wide, an elephant folio. There are 83 full page, beautifully printed sepia toned images, carefully selected from the available Curtis archives and international holdings. Almost all other photographic reproductions of his work were notably bad, according to A. D. Coleman (pp. v-vii), who provides a fascinating history of the Curtis legacy and its importance to contemporary understanding of the vanished North American Indian's life. Curtis documented Indian life for more than 30 years, living among many tribes, resulting in excess of 40,000 images. T. S. McLuhan's introduction (pp. viii-ix) dwells on the man and his working methods, and notes the priceless anthropological value of his images, in addition to their obvious artistic and aesthetic qualities. There are precious few copies of the Promontory Press publication available. The North American Indians that Curtis portrayed and their life style are now vanished. His work, monumental as it is, will leave the viewer wishing for more and hopeful that people everywhere will be exposed to the photographer's legacy to humankind. Each of the selected photographs is displayed in full size on the book's right hand page with a short label. Detailed captions for each grouping are found in a prefatory legend (pp.xiii-xv), with comments taken from the photographer's personal impressions as based on his field notes and annotations of specific pictures. Promontory Press acquired the rights to reprint an earlier imprint by Outerbridge and Lazard, Inc. (1972) and later the property of Dutton, a division of New American Library. It is a first edition thus. There is an area of foxing on the first free end paper and scattered foxing on the outer page edges. There is a small area of outer edge roughness on the rear board (touched up by a previous owner, quite unobtrusive), and a small bump on the spine heel. The rear board exterior also has a tiny nick and rubs. The book is unmarked and clean inside. 176 pages. There is an occasional whiff of storage scent. Sorry, but for international customers, due to size and weight, there will be a substantial additional handling and shipping expense for this book, the amount to be determined and agreed upon to prior to shipping.
