Paris, Chez Richard, Caile et Ravier, Libraires, rue Haute-Feuille, No. 11, An IX (1800-01), 8°, (I-V), VI-LVI, 318 pp., 1 Tabelle., 2 Taf., feiner Pappband mit Rvg.; ungewöhnlich breites und frisches Exemplar. First Edition of one of the most important medical classics and one of the most valuable texts in the history of psychiatry, written in the opening year of the new century. It is both a postcript to the eighteenth and a preface to the nineteenth century. Pinel wrote this treatise on the basis of his experience in the Bicêtre. His medical theories and classifications are very methodical and clear and they contain some original ideas, but their importance pales in comparison with his work of hospital reform and reorganization by which a new tradition was established and a new perspective opened for practical and research psychiatry; it is this achievement which always come to mind when the name of Philippe Pinel is mentioned. On May 24, 1798, at the risk of his own life and liberty, he struck off the chains of the insane at the Bicêtre, placing them in hospitals under lenient physicians, and doing away with the abuses of drugging and blood-letting to which they were subjected. Cura Hermanni Boerhave & Bernhardi Siegfried Albini. - Leiden, J. du Vivie et J. & H. Verbeek, 1725, Kupferstichtafel 472 x 290 mm., I. Wandelaar fecit; untere linke Ecke, kleiner Einriss. "The central point of the composition is the portrait of Vesalius." "This beautiful copper-plate is a refined, almost over-refined, and fairly faithful, though beautified, copy of the woodcut original. There are, however, two important departures from that design, the one architectural, the other decorative. There are but five columns in this noble interior instead of seven. The modification simplifies the scene and gives greater depth, against which the figures gain considerably. This proof of artistic taste and knowledge may be applauded because no violence has been done to actual fact - no such building having ever existed. Other changes of detail, notably in the arrangement of draperies, improve the effect, and, after all, are nothing but what might be expected when a line-engraver of the eighteenth century, a pastmaster of his art, sets himself to reproduce a wood-engraving of two hundred years before. The barbers are once more bare-legged ; the man at the column is naked as before ; the goat - the innovation of 1555 - is suppressed ; and generally speaking, the facial expression throughout, softened and sweetened as it is, has markedly lost the extraordinary power and force that distinguish the original. An amusing touch is to be observed - Wandelaar's inability, after his visit to Italy and his examination of the ruins and splendid buildings, to resist the reintroduction of plants - a common habit - growing in the interstices of the stones on the left; and this in an interior, with roof in perfect condition. The engraver of the 1555 Title-page had more acumen. There has been an effort, though not a very successful one, to adhere to the head of Vesalius of the 1543 Title-page. That of 1555 is properly rejected. The beard is fair, almost to whiteness, short, and trimmed to a point. There is no hint here of the Muttermal or birth-mark, nor any suggestion, either, of intellectual vigour. This pleasant, well-groomed demonstrator seems possessed of less character than almost anyone else in the place. How much the weakening of expression and the variations and alterations to be seen all over the plate are due to the method of engraving - which doubtless is, in part at least, responsible - need not here be discussed. But we feel that such a scene called for a stronger hand and for a less amiable personality than Wandelaar's ; it was inevitable that the passion inherent in the scene should evaporate under the kindly grace of the Dutchman's graver. The large cartouche has been suppressed ; and the simple escutcheon, with its three animals still resembling greyhounds rather than weasels, is placed above the cornice, without any sort of ornamental accessory. The lower cartouche on the floor level is inscribed: A. VESALII OPERA OMNIA ANATOMICA CHIRVRGICA MDCCXXV / Lugduni Batavorum Apud I. du Vivie et J. & H. Verbeek. [And in the margin] J. Wandclaar fecit." M.H. Spielmann, The Iconography of Andreasn Vesalus, No. 2c.

2 Orignal Photographoien, O.O., 6. Oktober (19)36, 15,4 x 21,2 cm auf 28,8 x 11 cm. Rare set, dedicated by "W(illiam). J(ames). Mayo/ To the Minneapolis Surigcal Society by/ Oct. 6/36" and "C(harles). H(orace). Mayo/ To the Minneapolis Surgical Society Library/ 1936". William James Mayo (1861-1939, Rochester received his M.D. degree in 1883 from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and then engaged at Rochester in the private practice of medicine and surgery with his father and later with his younger brother Charles Horace Mayo. Though William J. Mayo became the administrator in the practice, no important decisions were made without the full agreement of both brothers. He and his brother performed all the surgery at St. Mary's Hospital until about 1905. From this surgical partnership of the two brothers evolved the cooperative group clinic, later known as the Mayo Clinic. William James Mayo, who became a specialist in surgery of the abdomen, pelvis, and kidney, remained active in surgery at the clinic until 1928 and in administration until 1933. Charles Horace Mayo (b. July 19, 1865, Rochester-d. May 26, 1939, Chicago, Ill.) was the younger son of William Worrall Mayo and was characterized as a "surgical wonder." He received an M.D. degree from the Chicago Medical College (later part of Northwestern University Medical School) in 1888 and in the same year began private practice of surgery with his father and brother. Charles Mayo had the ability to work in all surgical fields; he originated modern procedures in goitre surgery and in neurosurgery; he performed highly successful operations for cataract of the eye and originated procedures for several orthopedic operations. In 1930 he retired from surgery at the clinic and three years later from administration. He was professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School from 1919 to 1936 and at the University of Minnesota Graduate School from 1915 to 1936. William J. Mayo said about his brother, "Charlie has . . . an intuitive mind, from his knowledge of physiology and anatomy and his understanding of the personality of the patient." At one time he was a member of the advisory board of Encyclopædia Britannica. With his brother, he alternated as chief consultant for all surgical services in the U.S. Army during World War I, serving with the rank of colonel. After the war, each brother was commissioned a brigadier general in the medical-corps reserve. Charles William Mayo (b. July 28, 1898, Rochester-d. July 28, 1968, Rochester) was the son of Charles Horace. He was a skilled surgeon and member of the board of governors of the Mayo Clinic, chairman of the Mayo Association, and a member (chairman 1961-67) of the board of regents of the University of Minnesota. He is noted for a speech he gave in 1953 as a member of the United States delegation at the United Nations. The clinic began to grow in size in the early 1900s, when many young physicians began to apply for positions as interns and assistants. At the same time, outstanding scientists in basic medical subjects were added to the clinic's training and research programs. In 1919 the Mayo brothers transferred property and capital to the Mayo Properties Association, later called the Mayo Foundation, a charitable and educational corporation having a perpetual charter. About 1900 the Mayo Clinic was changed from a partnership to a voluntary association of physicians and specialists in allied fields. In the late 20th century the clinic's staff included about 500 physicians, treating more than 200,000 patients annually.

Complete work in 8 volumes. Original full-cloth volumes in the format 29 x 20 cm with gold embossed spine titles and rich gold embossing on the spine and front cover; both covers also with rich floral blind embossing. Comprehensive, richly illustrated work by Irish writer, colonial official and explorer Robert Montgomery Martin (1801-1868) on the history of India and the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Includes 3 engraved titel pages, 120 steel-engraved illustrations and two double-page maps. From an early age, Martin joined several expeditions that took him to Ceylon, the Cape of Good Hope, the south-east coast of Africa and Madagascar, among others. Around 1838 he began to deal intensively with questions of the British colonial empire. The result of these studies was his work "Statistics of the Colonies of the British Empire", published in 1839. His special interest was in India, where he had already lived for a year in 1828. His present work "The Indian Empire" contains a complete history of India (volumes 1 - 5, 582 p.), which is divided into 5 chapters: Chapter I: Early history, mythological and traditional - Persian and other invasions - Greek expedition and conquers of Alexander - plundering incursions of Mahmood the Ghuznivede - Mohammedan conquests, dominion and downfall - Rise and progress of British power and supremacy. Chapter II: Topography - mountains and passes - Rivers - Plateaux - Provinces and chief towns - climate and diseases - geology - soil - mineralogy. Chapter III: Population - numbers density to area - proportion of Hindoos to Mohammedans - varieties of race - diverse languages - aborigines - slavery - past and present condition of the people. Chapter IV: Religion - Christian missions - education - the press - and crime. Chapter V: Civil government - judical administration - military power - and protected states and pensionaries. The second large part of the work entitled "History of the Mutiny of the Sepoy Troops" is dedicated to the Indian Rebellion of 1857 (Vol. 5: pp. 1 - 72; vol. 6: pp. 73 - 192; vol. 7 : pp. 193 - 328; vol. 8: pp. 329 - 504). Finally, a third part deals with the description of the illustrations contained in the work ("Description of the Engravings", vol. 5: p. 1 - 64; vol. 6: p. 65 - 136; vol. 7: p. 137 - 192). Spine somewhat faded; Bindings slightly rubbed, one back cover slightly stained; Pages partially slightly stained. Overall a very good copy of this fascinating, richly illustrated work on history and colonial history of the Indian Empire. Condition: Sehr gut. Format: 29 x 21 cm. 1815 in Halberstadt, seit 1834 Schüler von Menzel, F. Gouache on paper with gold and silver highlights, 32 x 25 cm (12.6 x 9.8 inches), (traces of mounting verso, minor age-toning to the silver highlights). CALLIGRAPHIC DRAWING: A drawing with calligraphic details by a French artist A. B. Duhamel, mostly known for his fashion engravings from the late 18th century. - A. B. Duhamel (1736-1800) was an illustrator and engraver, active in time of the late 18th century in France and is known for his colourful engravings of contemporary furniture and female fashion, published in Cabinet des Modes. He also executed portraits and book illustrations. The portrait represents Siméon Guy Mongy, born in 1763 in Béthune to a notary Siméon François Mongy. During the Reign of Terror he was arrested twice, after which he escaped to Münster. Not much is known about his life, but the script in the lower margin mentions him as a friend of the artist. The drawing showcases filigree calligraphic lines which were lost in the engraved reproductions of Duhamel s work. The portrait is accompanied with affectionate, somehow passionate verses by the author, dedicated to his friend, depicted on the portrait: Amitié, doux lien, flamme pure et durable, Que le Seigneur fait durée au fond de notre c ur; Verse toujours sur nous la lumière ineffable Et ta bienfaisante chaleur.
