About this Item: Black Sparrow Press, Los Angeles, 1971. First Edition. Deluxe Issue, one of 50 numbered copies specially bound and signed by the author, each with an original pastel painting bound in (this being copy no.31). Octavo (24cm); illustrated paper-covered boards and American flag-patterned cloth backstrip, with title label mounted to spine; publisher's original acetate dustjacket; [8],9-115,[5]pp. Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket, with some trivial loss at crown. Sharp copy of Bukowski's first novel, an autobiographical work based on his years spent as a postal clerk and mail carrier in Los Angeles. He left his job there when publisher John Martin offered him $100 a week for life if he wrote for his fledgling Black Sparrow Press. A cornerstone title for any serious Bukowski collection, and scarce in the deluxe issue. Krumhansl 38c. Seller Inventory # 3407
