Very good. - Over 90 words penned in blue ink on both sides of 9 inch high by 7 inch wide light grayish white watermarked paper. Thanking Seymour Halpern for his letter, James Lawrence Campbell writes: "I am so glad you like 'The Miracle of Peille' & hope that you will like my next book too". He goes on to add that "If you have a copy of the essay you mention I would take it as a great compliment to be allowed to read it." Signed "J.L. Campbell". Folded for mailing with a tiny tear to the left edge and a light spot of soiling at lower right. Together with a 22 inch high by 17 inch wide broadside poster published by E.P. Dutton & Co. advertising the book. Proclaiming the book to be "The Perfect Gift - For All Those Who Cherish Beauty and Sincerity in this Modern World" in a banner across the top, four columns of text are printed below the bold title "The Miracle of Peille / by J.L. Campbell / The Story / As Told By John Clair Minot / of the Boston Herald". A "Publisher's Statement" under a photographic illustration of "A shrine in 'Peille'" declares that "Some three years ago Mr. J.L. Campbell came to my office, an unknown at the time, introduced to me by several admiring friends. The manuscript ["Face Value"] he brought to me at that time I at once recognized as a very remarkable piece of work but one difficult to deal with." Reviews are printed in two center columns above a photographic illustration of the French village where the author wrote his book. A portrait of J.L. Campbell illustrates the top of the right column. The author, J.L. Campbell, has inscribed the broadside in ink below his portrait: "To Seymour Halpern This very small return for his appreciation of my book. / J.L. Campbell / London, 1930". Folded for mailing, the broadside is heavily chipped and torn along the top edge with creases and tiny tears to the left, right and bottom edges and at the junction of folds.Born in 1889 James Lawrence Campbell's novel "The Miracle of Peille" was first published by E.P. Dutton in 1929. Dutton had also published the author's "Face Value" in 1927.The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Seller Inventory # 34833

About this Item: UK, 1928. John Banting (illustrator). Original vintage advertising poster for Shell Oil. Fantastic image of Boadicea holding a spear, standing in her chariot led by two horses, ordering a foot soldier to oil the wheels. The caption reads: "For modern lubrication - Shell Oil." Boadicea (or Boudica / Boudicca / Buddug in Welsh) was queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe, leader of the uprisings in AD60-61 against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. Artwork by the notable English Surrealist artist, John Banting (1902-1972), who was introduced to the Paris art world by Cedric Morris and was involved with the Bloomsbury set, working on many book jackets for the Hogarth Press and designing ballet sets. He exhibited at Surrealist exhibitions in 1930 and 1936 and took part in Fantastic Art, DaDa and Surrealism in New York. In 1947 he contributed to the International Surrealist exhibition in Paris and signed the declaration of the English artists; the Surrealist movement in England then began to wane and he exhibited little afterwards.
