About this Item: Vienna: Galerie nächst St. Stephan, 1975. Folio (56 x 38 cm). (8) pages. Including one large poster by Immendorf (see photo). Some edgewear and tears, overall near fine - the poster is folded but is very well preserved except tiny tears to edges, almost invisible. First printing, very scarce item. - "Galerie nächst St. Stephan" is an art gallery in Vienna, Austria that was founded by Monseigneur Otto Mauer in 1954 on Grünangergasse next to the Stephansdom, where it is still located today. The rooms in which the Galerie nächst St. Stephan is located have served as an art gallery since 1923, when Otto Kallir-Nirenstein founded the Neue Galerie. Kallir-Nirenstein was Jewish and had to flee the country in 1938, when Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany. After living in Paris, he immigrated to New York, where he founded the Galerie St. Etienne ("St. Etienne" being "St. Stephan" in French). He is credited with introducing Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka to the US. The gallery in New York still exists today and is run by his granddaughter, Jane Kallir. After he left Vienna, Vita Künstler served as the head of the Neue Galerie until 1952. (.) In 1954, Monseigneur Otto Mauer took over the gallery, giving it the new name Galerie St. Stephan (it was later renamed Galerie nächst St. Stephan in 1964). Under this new name, the gallery would go on to become known as one of the most long-standing art institutions in Vienna. When Otto Mauer first founded the gallery, the cultural climate in Vienna was not very open to avant-garde art. He therefore took it upon himself to create a unique place where these artists could express themselves. With his dedication and remarkable intellect, he focused on content from the beginning. He created a platform for artists like Herbert Boeckl, Wolfgang Hollegha, Josef Mikl, Markus Prachensky, and Arnulf Rainer to exchange ideas about art. He was well-known all over Europe as an orator, collector, organizer, and friend of artists, and he worked to establish the gallery on an international level and initiated an active dialogue with the international avant-garde art scene. In 1958, he organized the first of many international art talks, bringing together art theoreticians and artists from Austria and the world in the Seckau Abbey in Styria. This taking stock of trends within contemporary art on a regular basis would become a gallery tradition that continues to this day. Otto Mauer remained the director of the Galerie nächst St. Stephan until his death in 1973. His galleryís program included Art Informel, contemporary architecture, installations (including those by Joseph Beuys), conceptual painting, and contemporary sculpture." In the 1960s, the artist Oswald Oberhuber curated several exhibitions in the gallery in which he often included his own artworks. After Otto Mauer died in 1973, he became the director of the gallery and continued its tradition of art education. He was primarily interested in conceptual art, and he worked to present the newest trends in his gallery exhibitions. ". Seller Inventory # 45588

About this Item: 1895, 1895. American poster for Chicago poster exhibition titled 'Living Posters'. Chicago: Stone & Kimball 1896. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1897. Plate no. 87. Indrammet på syrefrit karton i lys eg med anti-reflektivt glas med en UV beskyttelse på 70%.Framed. * Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Seller Inventory # 164525

Shores of the Polar Sea. A Narrative: MOSS, EDWARD L.

About this Item: London, Marcus Ward & Co., 1878. Folio. (49 x 35 cm.). Orig. full pictotial cloth. Richly gilt. Spine-ends repaired. First inner hinge strenghtened. Edges gilt. Halftitle with a stamp. (1-7)8-83 pp. With 16 mounted, fine chromolithographed plates, many textillustrations, 1 map. Title-page printed in red/black. Internally clean fine. First edition. "It is believed by both Artist and Publishers that a much fuller and more vivid idea of Arctic scenery can be produced by careful chromo-lithographic fac-similes of the original drawings made by Dr Edward L. Moss during the Expedition, than by any rendering in black and white. The sketches are not designed to illustrate the progress of the Expedition, or any stirring events in its history, so much as the appearance of the strange and desolate country by the shores of which the ships slowly steamed, the wonderful phenomena of the sky, and the effects of light and shade produced by a midnight sun, or a mid-day moon, on the ice-bound rocks which form the scenery of the region. They are here reproduced . in order to make them more generally accessible . It must be added that the sketches are all the work of one hand - Dr Edward L. Moss, who served on board the Alert in the Arctic Expedition which left England on the 29th of May, 1875, and entered the Arctic regions on the 4th of July in the same year. Although the Expedition failed in reaching the Pole - which was among the sailing orders on which it started - it yet achieved results of the highest scientific and geographic value. Of what kind was the life they led - what strange experiences they gained of natural phenomena, and the freaks of light on ice and rock - the accompanying drawings illustrate with a vividness and fullness never before arrived at in sketches of Arctic life." About this Item: Berlin/Copenhagen/Los Angeles: Deutsche Bank, 2005. Large folded poster. As new. "I think photomontages function like dreams," says Kirstine Roepstorff. "Itís impossible to dream of something you have no picture of, of something that hasnít been reproduced by our visual culture." Indeed, the collages of the artist, who divides her time between Berlin and Copenhagen, evoke an odd state of suspension. In The Third Way (2005), the work that makes up the poster motif for Deutsche Bank Art, a 19th-century schooner sails through a turquoise-blue sea leaving a foamy mist of paper shreds and glittery particles in its trail, innumerable specks of color and light". About this Item: 1956-1958, 1956. Condition: Good. FOUR ITEMS. A collection of three original letters [2 single-side, 1 double-side] and one postcard, dated 1956-58, all written by Rex Lampman, all addressed to the right-wing conspiracy publicist Eustace Mullins, each with some mention of efforts to get Ezra Pound released from St. Elizabeth's mental hospital. Provenance: the estate of Eustace Mullins. According to Mullins in a later interview "The official government story regarding Frost and Pound is that Frost, out of gratitude to Ezra for Ezra' s role in Frost's early career, got Ezra out of St. Elizabeth's. Frost had nothing to do with it. Ezra got out of St. Elizabeth's because a Congressman named Usher Burdick, at the behest of a fellow named Rex Lampman (Lampman's father owned a Fargo newspaper that helped to get Burdick elected), got up on the floor of the Congress and asked "Why is this man being held?". Burdick knew nothing of Ezra Pound, but he did some digging and found out that America's greatest living poet had been held in a mental hospital for 13 years with no trial. It was through Burdick's efforts and not Frost's that Ezra was released.,." - James Dyer interview titled "A Recent Visit With Eustace Mullins" - rense website. Seller Inventory # 024158
