About this Item: np (1966), New York, 1966. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8.5" x 11" offset flyer. Black-and-white photograph of Warhol with Gerard Malanga, Edie Sedgwick, and the band (sans Nico); text below. PROVENANCE: From the estate of Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison, with Morrison's widow Martha's signed letter of provenance included. Four long flattened creases from having been folded. Very good. Andy Warhol began his famed association with The Velvet Underground in late 1965, after catching the band at Cafe Bizarre in the Village. He found the Velvets "fabulous and demented" and offered (at Paul Morrissey's urging) to manage the group. Morrissey had been looking for a house band to be part of a series of multimedia happenings he and Warhol had envisioned. The debut of these extravaganzas soon occurred (infamously) at the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry dinner (Herald Tribune headline: "Psychiatrists Flee Warhol"). But the performances promoted in this flyer represent the first public appearances of the band with Nico and predate their debut album (produced by Warhol and featuring his iconic banana design) by more than a year. Appearing with the Velvets and Warhol were Edie Sedgwick, Gerard Malanga, Morrissey, Donald Lyons, Barbara Rubin, Bob Neuwirth, Daniel Williams and Billy Linich (aka Billy Name), many of whom eventually become members of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. And the Cinematheque shows clearly anticipate the Inevitable. The band performed in front of screens projecting Warhol's VINYL, EAT, and EMPIRE, and the show featured (according to the flyer): "Up-tight Rock 'n Roll, Whip Dancers, Film maker Freaks, Tapers, Anchovies, filming live episodes of the 'Up-Tight' series and including Film Premiere for the first time anywhere: Andy Warhol's MORE MILK, YVETTE starring Maria Montez and The Velvet Underground." Designed by Morrissey and featuring an image of Warhol with the Velvets taken at the Factory New Year's Eve 1965, this rare flyer is "the very first document linking Andy Warhol with The Velvet Underground" (Kugelberg, NEW YORK ART, 58). See also: Kugelberg, C/O THE VELVET UNDERGROUND (54) and DeRogatis, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: An Illustrated History Of A Walk On The Wild Side (48). From the estate of Sterling Morrison (who was something of the band's unofficial archivist during their career), a spectacular association of both a key Warhol event and a pivotal Velvet Underground performance. About this Item: Andy Warhol (1965), (New York), 1965. First Edition. Offset lithographed B&W poster. 8.5" x 11". Archivally mounted in a black metal frame with wooden back brace. Near fine. Vintage poster for the world premiere of Andy Warhol's seminal films, VINYL and POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL at Jonas Mekas' Filmmakers' Cinematheque. Photo-illustrated with a repeating image of Edie Sedgwick and Gerard Malanga, "[t]he poster's typewrit- ten descriptions of these Warhol films as 'cinema verite,' 'pop art,' and his 'first nonstatic film' denote an attempt to place underground cinema in a more mainstream genre of film. Its childlike drawing of a butterfly is reminiscent of the butterflies Warhol drew in the 1950s when he worked as a commercial illustrator" (Maréchal p. 29). Variously cited as either Warhol's most or least "entertaining" film, VINYL is an experimental adaptation of Anthony Burgess' A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (for which Warhol legitimately paid $3000 for rights), adapted by regular Factory collaborator Ronald Tavel, and featuring songs by The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Isley Brothers, and others. Shot by Warhol and Malanga in Edie Sedgwick’s apartment, POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL was Sedgwick’s first speaking and starring role in a Warhol film. Conceived as a day-in-the-life of the Factory superstar and at least conceptually autobiographical, IMDB's description of the story seems to sum up its intentions best: "A young, jobless woman stays in bed, reads, talks on the phone, smokes cigarettes, makes fresh cof- fee, and tries on some clothes from a large wardrobe." [Maréchal 4]. Seller Inventory # 15513

About this Item: Doubleday Doran 1938, 1938. Condition: Very Good. A first edition, first printing published by Doubleday Doran in 1938. Covers a little rubbed, rubber-stamped with 'property of Selznick International pictures Inc.' and 'story department' on the front endpaper and repeated on the title page. Inscribed in pencil on front endpaper 'No. 2 marked copy'. Pencilled notes and stamps on endpapers. A substantial number of passages have been underlined or marked in pencil throughout, while there are also a number of marginal notes in pencil. Two of the more interesting notes: on page 4: 'I think we must work out a photographic and musical introduction that is the equivalent of this chapter - both to set the key of our picture (as this does of the book) and to satisfy, at the outset, the book's lovers of our intentions of faithfulness'. And on page 23: 'All excellent without change as to dialogue, business, construction, up to here'. The book was originally sold in an auction in South Kensington late in 1983 as one of a group of books, mainly Hugh Walpole novels inscribed by the author to David O. Selznick. Given the notes within the book, we can assume this is Selznick's personal copy and as such is a marvellous film and literary connection, especially as Selznick gave Alfred Hitchcock this as his first film under contract. Selznick's wish was to remain true to the novel and this is echoed in the notes on page 23. The film was released in 1940 and won Hitchcock his first Oscar. The book presented here is accompanied by an original poster from the Selznick studios from that year. A marvellous association copy and one which would sit very well in any Du Maurier/Hitchcock collection. Seller Inventory # 9878

About this Item: United Artists Corporation Ltd, Toronto, 1963. Soft cover. Condition: Very good plus. 1st Edition. [150 leaves recto]; punched twice & secured with metal fastener in printed card covers with yapp edges; 277 x 214 x 15 mm (binder); 263 x 203 x 14 mm (sheets). A catalogue of duotone posters introducing 150 United Artists' films from 1954-62. Established in 1919 by Canadian actress Mary Pickford & her husband Douglas Fairbanks (together with Charlie Chaplin & D.W. Griffiths) to afford artists greater control over their work, United Artists entered a more focused phase in the early 50s under the direction of Arthur Krim & Robert Benjamin. The catalogue represents a capsule review of their first decade at the helm, comprising posters for 150 of the 375-or-so indie films distributed by 'the studio without a lot' during that dynamic decade in film-making. Many of the classics included were produced by the artists themselves, making the catalogue a quintessential record of much of the most creative screen theatre of the day. The binding holes in the covers having split, the catalogue is presently disbound; affording the opportunity to organize the contents in chronological & alphabetical order. Initially offering films for rent to Canadian theatres, the catalogue was periodically updated with supplementary leaves for new releases. The earliest film included was released 9 July 1954 (Apache starring Burt Lancaster); the latest, 8 December 1962 (Beauty & the Beast). There are 3 posters for films from 1954; 6 from 1955; 13 from 1956; 18 from 1957; 18 from 1958; 32 from 1959; 19 from 1960; 28 from 1961; & 13 from 1962. Highlights include 4 best pictures: MARTY (1955); AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (1956); BLACK ORPHEUS (1959, best foreign film); & THE APARTMENT (1960). Other standouts from 1955 include: NOT AS A STRANGER, & THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM (both Sinatra). From 1956: THE BRIDE IS MUCH TOO BEAUTIFUL (Bardot); & THE KING & FOUR QUEENS (Gable). From 1957: PATHS OF GLORY (Douglas with original Jim Thompson screenplay altered by Kubrick & Willingham); THE PRIDE & THE PASSION (the Grant-Loren tryst); SAINT JOAN (award-winning Jean Seberg in a Graham Greene screenplay); SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (Lancaster & Curtis with an Odets screenplay); TWELVE ANGRY MEN (Fonda); & WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (Power & Dietrich). For 1958: ANNA LUCASTA (Eartha Kitt & Sammy Davis, likely produced because of, yet in limited release despite, the Civil Rights Act of 1957); THE BIG COUNTRY (Peck, Heston & Ives); THE DEFIANT ONES (Curtis & Poitier); LA PARISIENNE (Bardot); LONELYHEARTS (Clift); THUNDER ROAD (Mitchum); & THE VIKINGS (Douglas, Curtis, Borgnine & Leigh). For 1959: ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW (Belafonte); ON THE BEACH (Peck & Gardner); PORK CHOP HILL (Peck); SOLOMON & SHEBA (Lollobrigida & Brunner, following the death of Tyrone Power); SOME LIKE IT HOT (Marilyn); TAKE A GIANT STEP (Johnny Nash & Ruby Dee); & A WOMAN LIKE SATAN (Bardot). For 1960: THE ALAMO (Wayne); EXODUS (Newman); THE FUGITIVE KIND (Brando & Woodward, in a Tennessee Williams screenplay); INHERIT THE WIND (Tracy & Kelly); THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (McQueen); NEVER ON SUNDAY (Mercouri); & THE UNFORGIVEN (Lancaster & Hepburn, in a John Houston back-breaker). For 1961: THE CHILDREN'S HOUR (Hepburn & MacLaine); JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (Tracy, Dietrich, Clift & Schell); THE MISFITS (Marilyn, Gable & Clift, with screenplay by the recently estranged Arthur Miller); THE NAKED EDGE (Cooper & Kerr, produced by Brando); PARIS BLUES (Newman, Woodward & Poitier; POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES (Ford, Davis & Ann-Margret); SOMETHING WILD (Carroll Baker & Jean Stapleton, the lost indie classic); & TOWN WITHOUT PITY (Douglas, with uncredited screenplay by Dalton Trumbo & first hit for Gene Pitney). And for 1962: BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ (Lancaster); FOLLOW THAT DREAM, & KID GALAHAD (both Elvis); THE MIRACLE WORKER (Anne Bancroft & Patty Duke); SERGEANTS 3 (the elusive second Rat Pack film); & WAR HUNT (Redford's first major role). A complete alphabetical list of represented films is available on request. Seller Inventory # 004345

This is a very large poster that will require additional shipping charges. Bresson's film received the Special Jury prize at Cannes Festival, 1962. "A minimal and austere telling of the story of Joan of Arc's trial and execution. Bresson's shortest feature film is a wonderful example of his evolution towards a stripped-down essentialist aesthetic style. As in all of his films, here Bresson attempts to go beyond the surface to the soul of his subject and in The Trial of Joan of Arc he achieves this goal with a film that reveals a great deal about human nature and particularly the resilience of the human spirit.". About this Item: Firenze: Zincografica, [1955], 1955. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A large envelope, containing 10 lobby cards, each with a photographic scene from the expedition, approx. 48 x 34 cm., together with two posters for the film, each approx. 68 x 48 cm., one or two short marginal tears, one poster slightly browned to verso and with a few tape repairs, overall in very good condition, the envelope slightly worn. K2 was first climbed by the Italians Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli in 1954. A film of the expedition was made by Marcello Baldi for the Club Alpino Italiano, based on footage by Mario Fantin. These large format lobby cards would have been used in cinemas to advertise Baldi’s film. It seems unlikely that complete sets would have survived in large quantities, particularly in the original envelope in which they were distributed. Seller Inventory # 105220

About this Item: East Hampton, New York, 1971. Condition: Very Good. Broadsides. Illustrated by Isadore Seltzer. Measuring 11" x 17" and 13" x 19.75". Overall very good with some toning, pins holes at the corners, and light edge wear; one poster with a couple of water spots. Eight posters for performances at the Old Post Office Theatre on Newtown Lane in East Hampton, New York, which was co-owned by photographer Ken Robbins who used the upstairs as his first dark room. The theatre specialized in avant-garde plays by the likes of Harold Pinter, Terrance McNally, Sam Shepard, Eugene Ionesco, Joe Orton, Rochelle Owens, Boris Vian, Leonard Melfi, and others. Drama apparently did not pay the bills so the theatre put the kibosh on live performance after just two seasons in favor of art house films. It was likely that few of these posters were made for each performances and even less have survived. Seller Inventory # 396783

About this Item: Partito Comunista Italiano / Editoriali Fratelli Spada, Roma, 1971. Paperback. First Edition. A bit of a puzzle: the poster appears to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the formation of the Associazione Bandiera Rossa, an Italian Trotskyist group; but the poster bears the imprint of the PCI, the main-line Marxist-Leninist party in Italy -- an ideological implausibility, even within the chaotic confines of Italian Marxism. Adding further to the confusion is a quotation from Antonio Gramsci (founder of the PCI) in upper right. In any case, a terrific graphic, attributed here to Luciano Prati (whose name we encounter on a few late-70s Italian film posters, but nowhere else). Duke University appears to be the only North American institution to hold a catalogued copy of this work. Lithographed poster (offset) in three colors; 100cm x 70cm (ca 40" x 28"); on heavy paper. Minor toning; light creases at margins; Near Fine - Grade A/A-. Seller Inventory # 16792
