Intensive research has gone into Rob Knight's study of the McKenzie family, which traces its prioneer NZ settlers, initially in Wellinton, then moving north to stamp a long-standing and influential mark on the Lower Rangitikei region. Thomas Urquhart McKenzie arrived in Wellington from the Scottish highlands at Christmas 1839 on the ship Orient This marked the beginning the McKenzie clan in NZ, which one descendant described as being "from potent stock who have spread like gorse in this little country." In 1842 Thomas U McKenzie married Margaret Fraser, another Scottish arrival, and with their offspring founded this branch of the McKenzie NZ dynesty. The author was fortunate that the couple's eldest daughter, Eliza (1843-1939), and two younger brothers compiled extended accounts of the earliy years of the T U McKenzie family and these provided much information for his familty history. Thomas and Margaret are recorded as having 22 children, 19 of whom reached maturity. However, some members died relatively early, some tragically, others due to illness Although based on the McKenzie family the story of it its early years provides a comprehenhsive view of the difficulties and disappointments, challenges lost or won, life of constant hard work and little relaxation, living in isolated and remote areas, as experienced by most early settlers to NZ, So, in addition to those interested in early McKenzie clan extension throughout NZ, there is also much of interest to students of NZ pioneering days -- from those who were there -- and their influence on the the national psyche. Additionally, there is Rob Knight's collection of detailed family records, which occupy the last quarter of the book. These, will appeal to those involved in NZ genealogical studies. The T U McKenzie clan moved north from Wellington to several other southern North Island areas before settling on the Poyntzfield estate which became the familtys' permanent residence. (Poyntzfield is a Scottish village and the property carried that name when occupied by the McKenzies. The book is a remarkable addition to NZ family histories and was published by the author in 1975. This first edition is 256 pages, with eight aopendices (including the family records) and an extensive index. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF with hint wear lower corners., Internally the text block is also NF, no inscriptions. It contains a great collection of b/w vintage photographs, some art, few maps etc. The VG+ dust jacket has front photograph, light wear to edges.
