About this Item: London: George Virtue - Joseph Rickerby, Printer, [no date - possibly 1835 or 1844-1845 or even 1860-1870]., 1870. VOLUME I ONLY. vi, 1142 pages. Hardcover: H 28.5cm x L 23cm. Original three-quarter black leather with brown cloth over boards; leather scuffed at spine ends and at board corners, some surface loss to leather at spine head and along joints, brown cloth well rubbed and worn at edges, 6cm curled peeling to cloth above center of front board adjoining leather. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers but with front free endpaper removed; top 4.5cm of front flyleaf clipped; frontispiece portrait with Fletcher's facsimile signature at bottom margin; pictorial title page has curved 9cm closed tear at top with chip at fore-edge followed by textual title page; foxing and browning on preliminary leaves and affecting the numerous steel plate engravings throughout; fairly mild foxing and browning to interior text leaves. A good copy. Among the most famous illustrated editions of the Bible, Fletcher (1787-1860) published a total of five volumes, two for the Old Testament and three for the New Testament. This particular volume has the London imprint of George Virtue upon both the pictorial and text title pages with "London: Joseph Rickerby, Printer, Sherbourn Lane" upon the latter's verso; neither title page features a secondary New York imprint. OCLC provides conflicting bibliographic data but it seems that the circa 1860 to 1870 reprint editions were issued with a dual London/New York imprint of "Virtue and Yorston" or "Virtue, Emmins, & Roberts" with altered subtitles as well as simply condensing Fletcher's original two volume Old Testament into a single two-in-one volume of 1622 pages. However, this copy contrasts to Yale University's 1835 editions which are cited as being 36cm tall. Please note that this heavy book will require additional postage and insurance.
