Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Practical and Devotional Family Bible (The Holy Bible), Containing the Old and New Testaments, according to the Authorised Version, with marginal readings, and original and selected parallel references, printed at length, and commentaries of Henry and Scott, with a series of maps and tinted landscapes illustrative of the lands of the Bible, from original sketches by David Roberts, John M'Farlane, Collins, 1861 A splendid first edition copy of one of the finest and most famous mid-victorian family bibles. This volume includes lengthy parallel passages, which suggest the appropriate meaning of the text. In general, the marginal references were simply used to indicate the chapter and verse, here these important notes, "comparing spiritual things with spiritual," are quoted at length. The condensed comments by Matthew Henry and Thomas Scott constitute the principal value of this edition. Illustrated with 31 tinted lithographed landscapes after drawings by David Roberts, 5 maps, 1 plan of ancient Jerusalem and its environs, as well as a family index. Index partly filled-in with handwritten list of names of the "Stokes" family with birth dates of Colley Farm (1860s) and Priory Farm (1870s) of Reigate, Surrey and possibly subsequently of Abbey Road, St. John's Wood, London. Lithographed plates protected by tissue guards. Six-page section Alphabetical order of the proper names in the Old and New Testaments with the meaning of the words in the original languages and 28 pages Summary of Biblical Antiquities in rear (that section illustrated with some b/w in-text illustrations). Original blind-stamped leather with gold lettering and raised bands to the spine. Age wear, scuffing and some staining on binding. Top and tail at front of spine slightly detached. Gilt edge to pages still heavily prevalent. Sporadic foxing throughout. Overall binding and interior is in good condition. Accompanied by three detached ribbon markers. Heavy item. Will be dispatched carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box.
