Half-leather and cloth boards, six-panelled spine with raised bands, some gilt tooling and blindstamping, and original label. Front pastedown has the leather plate, "R.H. Crawford Gardener 1893". Marbled foreedges. In generally very good condition, minor scuffing and wear. Internally tight, bright, and clean, apart from a small tear in the frontispiece and some fingering to the title page. The plates are very good, clean, fresh, no spotting, and the five double-page plates are particularly attractive. A handsome copy. A heavy book, and extra postage will be required. Colour frontispiece (chromolithograph), 26 further finely printed coloured (chromolithograph) plates heightened by hand with gum arabic including five superb double plates 4 of which depict orchids, 12 further b/w plates, some of which double (14 of the colour plates are of various fruit). Attractive contemporary half dark brown calf binding with dark blue cloth boards, 5 raised bands to spine with simple gilt decoration, red spine label. Binding very good with slight genearl wear and a little light rubbing. Contents clean and tight, minimal spotting otherwise unmarked, plates clean and bright, a couple with minimal spotting, no inscriptions. The sixth edition of the comprehensive guide to gardening and horticulture illustrated with monochrome copper plate engravings and published in two volumes. Bound with a separately paginated supplement entitled "General Management of the Stove Department". Generally in very good condition but lacking the plate of Wilmot's Strawberry which appears not to have been bound in. The vignette title page is also absent in Volume 1. Half bound in marbelled boards with spine labels and a 5cm split to top of front hinge on volume 1. The frontispiece from volume 1 is repeated in volume 2 which lacks a title. All other text is complete. Uncommon - the sixth edition of 1851 is represented, in COPAC, by a copy of volume 1, only, at Kew Gardens. With an index, appendix, frontispiece engraving of the author, occasional wootcut illustrations and 10 fine hand-coloured plates facing p.878. In contemporary brown full calf with raised bands and gilt titles to black label on spine. Light brown endpapers. frontispiece heavily spotted; more light spotting around plates towards rear. Head and tail caps pulled; heavy wear to spine with some rubbing to joints. Good overall. A revised version of the 'Practical Gardener', first published in two volumes in 1828. About this Item: Thomas Kelly, Paternoster Row., London, 1841. 4to. iv + 972 pp. + engraved portrait frontispiece and 10 hand-coloured plates with numerous wood-engravings to the text. Bound in recent half black morocco over original cloth; spine with gilt lining, date to base and contrasting maroon label, gilt. Occasional foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 10 hand coloured plates and numerous wood engravings in text. This copy lacks portrait frontispiece. Ten exquisitely hand-coloured plates, drawn by J. Webbe and W .T. Webb and engraved by W. A. Beever, depict forty flowering plants and shrubs. Illustrated with wood cuts of equipment, garden layouts and plans and elevations of green-, hot-, and forcing-houses, showing their arrangement and construction. Contains comprehensive lists of recommended vegetable and fruit varieties, useful for the garden historian. The horticulturist, Charles M'Intosh (1794-1864) had a distinguished career working for aristocratic estate owners and European royalty such as the King of the Belgians, with consequently, generous funding for his gardening projects. This title was one of the most popular of M'Intosh's works, first appearing as The Practical Gardener and Modern Horticulturist in two volumes, 1828-29, with new editions appearing until 1855.
