About this Item: New York: Pratt, Woodford, & Co., 1849., 1849. Probable first edition (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). 240 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 11.75cm. Original full dark brown calf leather binding; boards rubbed and stained with worn corners, slight splitting at head of front joint with scuffing lengthwise, slight short splitting at heel of rear joint too, shallow chipping at spine heel, spine's original black title label edge-worn with some flaking and slight loss to otherwise bright gilt lettering. Strong fading to toned marbled edges, text block corners at confluence of top edge and fore-edge worn and abraded with some leaf corners creased; varied staining, toning, and foxing to interior pages; strong creasing to front flyleaf; old pencil signatures on front free endpaper and title page with dated inscription on rear flyleaf. One quire slightly pulled so that its fore-edge fractionally extends past rest of text block; binding otherwise firm. A good antiquarian copy. OCLC does not record any earlier editions than this 1849 imprint but does have citations for a twenty-first revised edition by 1853 which, in the least, indicates that the book was a successful seller.
