First Edition
Scarce edition of this cornerstone work in occultism by the German physician and theosophist, Franz Hartmann (1838-1912). This book explores the principles and practice of magic from a scientific standpoint rather than a spiritual or supernatural one. This copy comes from the library of RLDS leader and religious scholar, James D. Wardle (1915-1997), who was known in Salt Lake City as the "Socrates of State Street." As far as we can tell, this 1888 "third edition" revised and enlarged from the first, is the first publication of this title in the U.S. The first edition was published by Redway, London, 1886, and there is also a third Redway edition in 1888. However, we find no mention of a second edition anywhere. In any event, a very scarce copy, OCLC citing just 4 holdings for this Boston printing. 8vo, 324, [4]pp, publisher's ads at rear. Frontis plate and a few tables/illustrations in the text. Original red cloth with gilt vignette to front cover and lettering to spine. Private library labels of James D. Wardle to spine and front pastedown, signature to half title. Boards with some staining, over opened in a few spots throughout. A very good copy First American edition, and Third Edition overall.
