About this Item: Randel & Baremore, New York, N.Y., 1865. Not Bound. Condition: Very Good. Manuscript. Receipt made out to A. Paine, for $ 112.00, noted as paid cash in gold; with revenue stamp affixed. Approx. 4 1/2" x 8 1/2" size; on the firm's imprinted billhead. Some edge-wear, soiling; old fold lines; back with old paper repairs at folds; in good condition. Interesting NYC diamond & jewelry business history ephemera. ". Earlier, in 1840, Randel had partnered with James Baremore to form the high-end jewelry company Randel & Baremore The firm would probably have been lost in the tangle of upscale jewelers at the time if it were not for a daring step Randel and Baremore took shortly after opening. At a time when wealthy women were judged by their pearls, Randel and Baremore focused on diamonds. Years later the New-York Tribune would remember "they determined to make diamonds their specialty, and in this they were pioneers, as no diamond specialists existed here at that time." They also took another bold step in 1880. The New-York Tribune said "they took up diamond cutting, and this they carried on in the American style This method aims at producing effect rather than conserving the weight of the gems." Their new methods focused on brilliance rather than size. Once again their daring paid off; prompting the Tribune to say their "enterprise was most successful." (ref. Tom Miller Wednesday, August 28, 2013 The Henry Randel House -- No. 38 E.38th Street). Seller Inventory # 24410

About this Item: London: Charles Griffin and Company 1904, 1904. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. [iii]-xv, [1], 627 pp. Translated from the German with additions by L.J. Spencer. Illustrated with 20 plates, many of which are printed in colour with diagramatic tissue overlays; 94 figure drawings, tables and charts, maps and photographs within the text. Complete. Bound in original half burgundy morocco, extra gilt, with cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Internally clean, binding a little worn to foot of spine. A near fine copy. PROVENANCE: 'Lancelot Wilkinson Esq., F.R.G.S. Physician in Ordinary to HM the Sultan, Fez, 1909. Morocco' [inscribed by owner]. Ms. footnote added "cf. the 'Cullinan' (Premier Mine S[outh] A[frica]) given by S[outh] A[frican] R[epublic] to HM the King of England, 1909." A curious ownership; Wilkinson was a noted physician, published in The Lancet medical journal, becoming Royal Doctor to Mulai Abdelhafid, Sultan of Morocco, 1908-12. Jewellery was an important historic craft in the former North African empire, drawing on a wealth of cultures, tribes and traditions from the 'Kingdom of a thousand Kingdoms'. The Moroccan mining industry centred on The Lesser Atlas mountain range, which was a source of gold, silver and titanium. Wilkinson's handwritten note refers to the Cullinan Diamond, the largest polished white diamond in the world, discovered near Pretoria in 1905 and subsequently presented to the British Sovereign and Emperor, King Edward VII. Bauer's 'Precious Stones' is the first modern encyclopedic treatment of the entire field of gemology and still an invaluable scientific reference. Gives the localities and the scientific aspects of precious and semi-precious stones including pearls and coral and with additional information on cutting and polishing of gemology. "One of the greatest gemological works ever published" -Sinkankas 470-71. Seller Inventory # 46598
