Part of Lardner's Cabinet Encyclopaedia. 12mo: [32 adverts for the Encyclopaedia], vii, 279pp. Original cloth backed paper boards, ends of spine damaged. Paper label. End papers quite browned, but otherwise good internally.

Brown boards with fairly recent light brown cloth spine, no lettering. 12 (pub. list) + viii, inc engraved t.p. dated 1830 with central fig. of Bacon + 372 + printed Lardner series t.p. dated 1831 with John Taylor as added publisher; 2 prev.owners' sigs to fr. paste-down dated 1869, 1971 plus very chipped and dark fragment of oiginal sp. title tipped in on light yellow slip attached to top edge, slight opening to top gutter between viii/1, otherwise remarkably clean and tight for age though some gatherings protruding as produced, touch of dustiness to top edge. Aesthetically the main fault is unlettered re-backed covers. A classic document from a key transitional period in the physical sciences. 11 cm x 18 cm.

Exhaustive study of Natural Philosophy by the English mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor, and experimental photographer. Herschel was the originator of the "Julian day" system in astronomy. Part I introduces general aspects of Natural Philosphy, part II introduces the principles and rules by which a systematic examination of nature should be conducted. This copy belonged to the Jewish scholar Harry Orlinsky. "A synoptical table of the contents of Dr. Lardner's cabinet encyclopedia" glued to inside front cover. Minor wear to edges. Corners rubbed and slightly bumped. Head and tail of spine bumped and slightly worn. Starting at inside front cover. Heavy foxing to end papers and title page. Else, a tight copy in good condition.
