Still, in very good condition, uncut, with the original final integral blank leaf. 14 pp., (1 blank l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this elegy for the talented, controversial, and ultraconservative cleric. Among the famous names bandied about are Guido (Reni), Rubens, Herschel, Newton, and Zenobia; among the exotic places, Niagara Falls (p. 5) and Antarctica (p. 10).Macedo (1761-1831), the most prolific writer of his time, produced both prose and verse but is best known for his pamphleteering: "Ponderous and angry like a lesser Samuel Johnson, he bullies and crushes his opponents in the raciest vernacular . his idiomatic and vigorous prose will always be read with pleasure" (Bell, Portuguese Literature p. 282). Macedo was also well known for his arrogance in literary matters: he condemned as worthless Homer's poems, which he had never read in the original, and believed his own epic O Oriente could have taught Camões how Os Lusiadas should have been written.*** Not located in Innocêncio. Reposta apologetica de . presbytero da Congregaçam: FIGUEIREDO], Antonio Pereira

About this Item: Lisbon, Na Officina de Antonio Rodrigues Galhardo, 1768., 1768. 8°, old plain blue wrappers (small holes, chipped spine repaired with paper and cellophane tape). Small ornamental woodcut on title page. First leaves detached. Light stain on title page and following leaf. In good condition. Old octagonal paper tag with blue border and manuscript shelfmark ("5") on front wrapper. (1 l.), 106 pp. *** FIRST (and only separate?) EDITION of the Resposta. The Tentativa, which dealt with cases when bishops rather than the pope might issue dispensations for marriage, was widely discussed throughout Europe, with translations to Italian, Latin, French, German, and Spanish, as well as a second and third Portuguese edition, Lisbon 1766 and 1769. The Spanish theologian Gabriel Galindo sent a critique of the Tentativa in the form of a letter to Pereira de Figueiredo dated July 17, 1767. (We have been unable to locate a separately published Spanish version of Galindo's letter.) In this Resposta, Pereira de Figueiredo translates Galindo's letter (pp. 3-12) and publishes his reply. A second edition of the Resposta appeared with the third edition of the Tentativa, and a Spanish translation appeared in Madrid, 1768. There appears to be yet a third edition of the Tentativa, revised and augmented, published Lisbon: Antonio Rodrigues Galhardo, 1769.António Pereira de Figueiredo (1725-1797) was an Oratorian priest interested in philological studies who also wrote a considerable number of didactic works on Latin and history. He moved between Enlightenment and theological thought as the political winds blew. After Portugal cut off relations with the Holy See, Figueiredo put himself at the service of the political-religious policy of the Marquês de Pombal. In 1768 he abandoned his order, which had fallen out of favor with Pombal, to take up a post as a deputy of the Real Mesa Censória. His translation of the Bible into Portuguese has been reprinted a number of times.*** Innocêncio I, 229; for some 50 additional works, see I, 223-30. About this Item: Officina Plantiniana. Condition: Used - Very Good. Antwerp: Officina Plantiniana [Moretus], 1596. Folio, [14], 704 pp., [32 pp. Index]. Collation: a8, A-Z6, Aa-Qq6, Rr5, Ss-Zz6, Aaa-Mmm6, Nnn4, a-e6, f2. Collation agrees with Adams (B-238), with two exceptions. Adams does not note the lack of Rr6, although the continuity of text and page numbering strongly suggests that this leaf was never issued. Also, in the last gathering, where Adams calls for 4 leaves (f4), this copy has only two (f2), concluding with the last page of the Index. Comparing this volume to others in the Plantin printing of Baronius, it seems nearly certain that the missing leaves were the colophon (f3) and a blank (f4). Bound in full contemporary vellum over wooden boards. Boards once held closed with metal clasps, mostly removed but with some of the mounting hardware remaining. Spine with raised bands, in six compartments. Two spine labels, each gilt-decorated. Front and rear boards elaborately ruled and decorated in blind, including ecclesiastical arms (one panel dated 1590) and decorative borders. Vellum moderately darkened, some wear and scuffing at edges. Corners renewed at some point with plain cloth. Endpapers have been reinforced in places. Small library stamp (cancelled) on verso of title. Overall, an extremely sturdy and very presentable copy. The first Plantin edition of this volume of Baronius, printed by Christopher Plantin's successor, Moretus. Seller Inventory # S23655

About this Item: E Theatro Sheldoniano Oxonii, first edition, 1696, 1696. Edition of 750 copies. Twentieth century quarter- morocco and boards, spine bands and gilt titling, folio, 42 cm, [12], L, [2], 159, [25] pp, title-page vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre; head pieces. The first printed catalogue of the manuscript and book collection of Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631: Samuel Pepys called this library "one of the jewels of the Crown of England", it has recently been described as "arguably the most important collection of manuscripts ever assembled in Britain by a private individual" (C.J. Wright), and it was one of the three founding collections of the British Museum. Although a later Cottonian catalogue by Planta (1802) is also important, this 1696 catalogue remains essential as a record of the library before the disastrous 1735 fire at Ashburnham House, which resulted in the loss of many manuscripts. Among the treasures accumulated by Cotton were: the Lindisfarne Gospels, two examples of Magna Carta, Beowulf, , the Old English Martyrology, Asser's Life of King Alfred, multiple versions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede's Ecclesiastical History, the ninth-century Utrecht Psalter, the sole copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and a fifth-century Greek Genesis that had once belonged to Origen, and critically important state papers from the Tudor and Stuart periods. Thomas Smith, the librarian and author of the volume, prefaced his catalogue with essays containing material of great interest drawn from his long association with the Cotton family and knowledge of the acquisition history ( "Vita D. Roberti Cottoni, equitis aurati & baronetti:"and "Bibliothecæ Cottonianæ historia et synopsis:"). His catalogue categorizes the contents of the library in six divisions: (1) manuscripts in Old English; (2) monastic registers or cartularies; (3) books of the Bible and collections of saints' lives; (4) genealogies and heraldic material; (5) histories, annals, and chronicles, chiefly of early British history; and (6) records of state. Manuscript note listing the advantages of this edition over that of Planta bound in at front. Lacking the frontispiece portrait of Cotton, spine and boards slightly rubbed, head of spine worn with slight loss, old paper repair to fore-edge margin (p. ix), one untrimmed folded corner (temoin) at page 97, some thinning and darkening of leaves at fore-edge margins where used for turning pages, overall a Good clean copy. About this Item: Cádiz, 1675. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this rare and important attack on Protestantism. [6], 126 pp. plus a beautifully engraved plate. A UNIQUE COPY: A CONTEMPORARY LEARNED ENGLISH PROTESTANT (surely a clergyman) MADE EXTENSIVE MARGINAL NOTES, EXCORIATING THE TEXT, IN AN EXTREMELY NEAT, EVEN ELEGANT HAND. Unfortunately, an earlier binder trimmed these notes, yet virtually everything is still mostly comprehensible. The spelling and diction, of course, are little removed from Shakepeare's time. A brief example: "[Th]is whole [ch]apter strikes [mo]re at ye Church [of] Rome than ye [au]thor would be [wi]lling to acknow[le]dge." 8vo. Beautifully bound in recent quarter vellum and decorated boards. FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. Seller Inventory # 38029
