INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "To Bert Thompson — My good friend! Waggoner 12-15-64." This book is the summary written by the Texas Attorney General, Waggoner Carr, about the state of Texas' independent investigation into the assassination of JFK and wounding of Connally. Laid into the rear (originally stapled in) is a TLS, folded in half, from Carr to Thompson on Carr's official State of Texas letterhead and dated December 18, 1964: "Dear Bert: I thought you might like to have a permanently bound copy of the Texas Supplemental Report on the assassination of President Kennedy for your library. This is being sent to you with my personal compliments and was not printed at state expense. I continue to be deeply grateful to you for all of the help and assistance you have been to me. . .Yours sincerely, Waggoner" It is not known how many copies of the report Carr had bound but it clearly was not a great number. The covers have light soil and the text block shows evidence of dampness (slight discoloration of paste downs and page waviness). The letter has a stain at the fold which also has a 2" tear. This book will close its own text block, but we downgrade to "good" due to the fact spine of book was once damp, and there has been some resultant transfer of the blue-black ink of the cloth spine covering both to extreme inside corners of the (Dealey Plaza map) endpapers, and to verso (only) of the dust jacket, also at head & heel of spine only. None of this staining is visible from exterior of the book, though heel of jacket spine also shows some small tears and rumpling. Some pages also show discernible rippling from having once been damp; call the whole piece a less-than-ideal "good in good." Main interest here, however, is that the author, the famed crusading New Orleans district attorney who brought the only criminal prosecution stemming from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy -- an investigation that challenged the official Warren Commission cover-up, an investigation which Garrison contends was infiltrated and sabotaged by elements of the FBI and CIA as well as being vilified (big surprise) by the Mainstream Media -- has signed to the map endpapers. Garrison, who believed America's intelligence community deployed multiple shooters to assassinate Kennedy to prevent an easing of relations with Russia and to prevent the president from pulling American forces out of Vietnam, dates this copy "November, 1988," inscribes to Richard Anderson, and signs quite clearly to the (map) FFE "Best regards, Jim Garrison." Garrison's 34-day trial of New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw as an assassination conspirator ended in acquittal. Kevin Costner played the district attorney in the 1991 Oliver Stone film based on this book. Garrison, who went on to be elected a judge of the state Court of Appeal, died at age 70 in 1992. Lower cloth edge has a faint stain from possible moisture exposure not affecting the interior. Cloth is faintly soiled and scuffed. Lower edge of a few pages have a tiny tear and crease. Text has some ink underlining else very good in lightly soiled and yellowed shelfworn dustjacket with a short closed tear to the top front panel. Front flap has a crease else good. Previous owner's naem in red ink at top front fly. Laid into this copy of the this exhaustive and now classic report on the assasination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1963 are three TWX printouts, the first two on yellow hole punched printout paper with a name in ink and dated Octoer 21, 1975 as follows: 1) A message sent "completing the list of present locations of Warren Commission staffers" and listing Francis W.H. Adams, Joseph A. Ball, Leon D. Hubert and Melvin Eisenberg. 2) A note concerning the current position of Warren Commission staffer Wesley Lieber as a law teacher at U.C.L.A. with his current telephone number and 3) A lengthy message sent from Santa Barbara, California concerning the alledged plot to assasinate former President Gerald Ford with mention of Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme who it mentions had no connection with the plot that this message refers to. This message is somewhat faded but quite readable on plain printout paper which is edge yellowed with a few tiny edge tears. All three messages have been folded at least once. A somewhat interesting collection of Kennedy and Ford assasination related ephemera laid into the classic book on the Kennedy assasination with the introduction by Harrison Salisbury. The book profiles senators who crossed party lines and/or defied the opinion of their constituents to do what they felt was right and suffered severe criticism and losses in popularity because of their actions. It begins with a quote from Edmund Burke on the courage of the English Statesman, Charles James Fox, in his 1783 attack upon the tyranny of the East Indian Company in the House of Commons. The book was widely celebrated and became a best seller. John F. Kennedy is credited as its author, but there are credible allegations that most of it was the work of his speechwriter, Theodore Sorensen. Kennedy was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946 for the state of Massachusetts. In 1953, he was elected the junior Senator from Massachusetts, and served in the Senate until he was elected president in 1960. It was a passage from Herbert Agar's book The Price of Union about an act of courage by an earlier senator from Massachusetts, John Quincy Adams, that gave Kennedy the idea of writing about senatorial courage. He showed the passage to Sorensen and asked him to see if he could find some more examples. This Sorensen did, and eventually they had enough not just for an article, as Kennedy had originally envisaged, but a book. With help from research assistants and the Library of Congress, Kennedy wrote the book while bedridden during 1954 and 1955, recovering from back surgery.
