About this Item: Thomas Nelson & Sons Limited, London, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very sound copy in blue decorative cloth boards with clear title lettering in gilt on the front and spine. A little knocking and rubbing to the extremities. Several owner and gift inscriptions across the front spread with two having been crossed through, giving a rather messy appearance. Toning to the end papers and page block edge. The inner hinge is cracking open somewhat at the title/dedication spread but the binding is in no danger and is held together firmly. In all still a very decent copy of a scarce first impression. Quantity available: 1
From: M RICHARDSON RARE BOOKS (PBFA Member) (Ashby cum Fenby, NE Lincolnshire, LINCS, United Kingdom)
About this Item: Thomas Nelson and Sons, London, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A reasonable copy although not without some flaws. On the plus side there are no inscriptions and the pages are nice and clean throughout most of the book. There is some very mild foxing occasionally and more so, especially on the dedication page and prelims. The hinge has been cracked early in the book enough to reveal the linen of the binding underneath and to loosen the book a little. The green cloth boards are somewhat spotted in appearance and a little knocked and worn at the extremities. The white background of the title block to the spine has partially worn off with the gilt title lettering themselves still mostly crisp apart from the letter "e" of "Prester" All this said the book is still a decent and presentable enough copy given its scarcity. Quantity available: 1
From: Crask Books (Loughborough, United Kingdom)
About this Item: London: Thomas Nelson & Sons, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Buchan s first major success in his fictional writing. I m not absolutely certain but I think that, as with The Thirty-Nine Steps, it may well have been continuously in print since its first publication in 1910. It is an exciting tale of rebellion in Southern Africa. It was originally published in serial form in The Captain magazine as The Black General and the first US edition bore the title The Great Diamond Pipe. All are the same story. VG first edition similar to the variant binding (see note to Blanchard A21) Decorated blue cloth with gold lettering on the spine. However, the lettering on the front is also gold rather than the usual dark blue. The spine has faded and the gold lettering and decoration is badly faded with most of the gold leaf gone. There is a quarter-inch split at the head of the spine. The cloth on the boards is rippled in places and the rear cover has a small scuffed area. The front board is bumped at the top corner and the board has cracked inside the cloth. Bright internally with browned endpapers and an inscription on the fly-leaf. Seller Inventory # 9406

Quantity available: 1
From: Edinburgh Books (Edinburgh, United Kingdom)
About this Item: Thomas Nelson and Sons, London, 1920. Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated. No edition or date stated but the book appears to be from c1920. 376pp., a frontisppiece map and 4 colour plates by the Scottish artist and illustrator Stephen Reid (1873-1948). This is an attractive early edition of John Buchan's adventure novel, first published in 1910. It tells the story of a young Scotsman named David Crawfurd and his adventures in South Africa, where a Zulu uprising under the charismatic black minister John Laputa is tied to the medieval legend of Prester John. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and gold titling and a design with an onlaid circular colour illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The titling on the spine is worn and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with offsetting to the free endpapers and a small set of initials neatly written on the front free endpaper. Size: 7.6" Tall. Seller Inventory # gScotLitBuchan1
