About this Item: 1959. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A six volume set of the complete works of the influential Georgian author Jane Austen, illustrated throughout, in the original dustwrappers. Complete in six volumes. The third edition of these works, being the third editions of the Oxford Illustrated editions. In the original dustwrappers, 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Mansfield Park', 'Northanger Abbey and Persuasion', and 'Minor Works' are unclipped, 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Emma', are price-clipped. Each volume shows facsimiles of the original title pages. 'Sense and Sensibility', published 1967. The novel tells the story of three sisters, Marianne, Elinor, and Margaret, and follows them in their trials of love. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and five plates. Collated, complete. 'Pride and Prejudice', published 1959. This is perhaps one of the most famous love stories of all time. Mr Darcy and Lizzie Bennet suffer equally from their pride and prejudices, ensuring a tumultuous journey for them. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates. Collated, complete. 'Mansfield Park', published in 1973. This is a novel about the life of Fanny Price, who is sent to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle when her family become overburdened. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and seven plates. Collated, complete. 'Emma', published in 1966. The novel follows about a year in the life of the young woman Emma Woodhouse, who decides to try her hand at matchmaking, finding matches for her new best friend, Harriet. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and twelve plates. Collated, complete. 'Persuasion' is Jane Austen's last completed novel, published six months after her death in 1817. Anne Elliot is Austen's most mature heroine in terms of age, making 'Persuasion' possibly Austen's most unique novel. It tells the story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth, and follows them during their second chance of love after their broken engagement seven years earlier. Bound with 'Northanger Abbey', a novel about Catherine Morland, the young and naive heroine who travels to Bath, and becomes intrigued by the death of the mother of the man she loves. Published in 1972. Illustrated with two frontispieces, and nine plates. Lacking two plates, 'Frontispice to Mrs. Parsons' The Mysterious Warning', and 'Title-Page of Mrs. Radcliffe's The Mysterious of Udolpho'. 'Minor Works' contains 'Juvenilia', 'Lady Susan', 'The Watsons', 'Sanditon', 'Plan of a Novel', verses, and prayers. Published in 1969. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and four plates. Collated, complete. Jane Austen has become one of the most popular Georgian writers, her novels being loved for generations. Her ironic social commentary offers an interesting insight into Upper-Middle class Georgian life. Edited by R. W. Chapman, a scholar of Jane Austen. Condition: In the original publisher's cloth binding with the original dustwrappers. 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Mansfield Park', 'Northanger Abbey and Persuasion', and 'Minor Works' are unclipped, 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Emma', are price-clipped. Externally, smart.
