About this Item: London Printed for John Murray, 1816. First Edition of "Emma" Uncut, in a Contemporary Binding [AUSTEN, Jane]. Emma: A Novel. In Three Volumes. By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice," &c. &c. London: Printed for John Murray, 1816. First edition. Three twelvemo volumes. (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches; 188 x 110 mm). [4], 322, [1]; [4], 351, [1, printer s imprint]; [4], 363, [1, advertisements] pp. Bound without the half-title in volume I, which is very common since this leaf was printed as part of the last signature and was therefore either overlooked (and left in place) or discarded by many binders of the period. Even copies in original boards often lack this half-title, most notably the Mount Bellow copy, described in 1933 Sotheby's sale catalogue as "in the finest possible state." Bound without rear endpaper in volume III. Contemporary and almost certainly Continental, possibly German original quarter red paper spines over marbled boards, gilt-stamped on spines in Gothic style "Emma By the Author of Pride and Prejudice." Most certainly this book was sent straight from the publisher to the binder in sheets. Pages occasionally opened rough causing marginal tears, but with no loss of text. Namely to leaves E2 and N8 of vol. I, E10-E12, G11 and O11-O12 of vol. II and D10 of vol. III. Some minor toning and staining to pages 69-72 of vol. I, and pages 4-5, 108-109, and 206-207 of vol. III. A bit of minor underlining to page 269 of vol. III. Overall, a fine, fresh and entirely uncut copy in a contemporary binding. Housed in a red morocco backed clamshell. Emma was published on 29 December 1815. "2000 copies were printed, and of these the records show that 1248 were sold by October 1816" (Gilson). The first American edition appeared in Philadelphia in 1816 and the first French translation in Paris in the same year, with a partial reissue in Vienna in 1817. No further editions are known until Richard Bentley s reissue in his Standard Novels series in February 1833. Gilson A8. Keynes, Austen, 8. Sadleir 62d. HBS 67001. $45,000. Seller Inventory # 67001

About this Item: London: Printed for John Murray, 1816. 3 vols., sm. 8vo in 12s, (173 x 105 mm), [4], 322, [1, blank]; [4], 351, [352, printer's imprint]; [4], 363, [364, ads.] pp. Very early half calf, rebacked to style, blue/grey boards, tips scuffed. Ink signature in each volume of "Mr. Murray of Simp(illeg.)". Occasional light spotting; generally a very good copy. First edition. Bound without the half-title in volume I as usual: this leaf was printed as part of the last signature and was therefore either overlooked (and left in place) or discarded by many binders of the period. Emma, published on 29 December 1815, was written after Austen's move to Chawton, and was the last novel to be completed and published during her life. 2000 copies were printed. The identity of "Mr. Murray" has not been established but perhaps he was a relative of the publisher. Gilson A8. Seller Inventory # 123003

About this Item: London: John Murray, 1818, 1818. 4 volumes, duodecimo (169 x 107 mm). Contemporary continental half sheep, red lettering pieces and white numbering pieces lettered in black, marbled sides, pale blue-green endpapers. Housed in a burgundy quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spines worn at ends with neat repair at foot of vol. I, tips worn, contents lightly browned throughout, early reinforcement with blue paper in gutter at two places (vols. I and IV, between quires B and C), marginal waterstaining at head of prelims in vol. I and at upper outer corner of first few leaves of vols. II and IV, a few stains, strongest at vol. IV, D2v-D3r, and fainter to the leaves either side. Overall, a good copy in a contemporary binding, no doubt continental, the labels somewhat eccentrically lettered. With half-title in vol. I only, the others discarded by the contemporary binder, as often. First edition of Jane Austen's final published work, with an excellent provenance showing early readership of Austen on the continent. This publication pairs her last completed novel with the light-spirited satire that was probably the first full-length novel she wrote. Her brother Henry's biographical notice, dated 13 December 1817, is the first acknowledgement in print of Jane Austen as the author of her six novels. The title pages have the early ownership inscriptions of the Polish countess Calista Rzewuski (1810-1842), who in 1840 married the great Dante scholar Michaelangelo Caetani (1804-1882); she died at Castel Gandolfo, Rome. Their son, Onorato, was Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Italy; their daughter Ersilia was an archaeologist and the first woman who was admitted to the oldest scientific academy, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. About this Item: London: Richard Bentley, 1833, 1833. 5 volumes, octavo (162 x 106 mm). Contemporary green calf, expertly rebacked to style, red morocco labels, gilt double rule and blind roll to covers, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers and sides. Bound without half-titles, terminal blanks and advertisements. Bindings refurbished and in fine condition. Contents without any chipping or tearing; some light foxing, plates a little browned, light running stain to Sense and Sensibility pp. 37-62, offset discolouration to rear endpapers of Pride and Prejudice, light creasing to a few corners. A very good set. Engraved vignette titles and frontispieces by William Greatbach after Ferdinand Pickering. First collected edition of Jane Austen's novels. In 1832-33 Richard Bentley bought the copyright of Pride and Prejudice from the executors of Thomas Egerton and of the remaining novels from Henry and Cassandra Austen. Austen's novels had not been reissued since 1818 so these printings - published by the enterprising Bentley in his Standard Novels series - constitute early editions: Sense and Sensibility, third edition (pre-dating the first American by a few months); Pride and Prejudice, fourth edition; Mansfield Park, third edition; Emma, second edition (omitting the dedication to the Prince Regent included in the first edition); Northanger Abbey/Persuasion, second edition. These are also the first English editions to be illustrated. The very first Austen illustration appeared in a French translation of Persuasion (entitled La Famille Elliot) with a frontispiece by Delvaux after Chasselat (Paris: A. Bertrand, 1821). The Bentley illustrations, by the obscure Ferdinand Pickering, played an integral part in the reception of Austen's novels; according to one Austen scholar, they "promoted a sense that her novels were best understood as familial, female focused, and sensational. For decades, these illustrations would have served to steer readers away from the conclusion that Austen's fiction ought to be understood as social, comic, or didactic" (Davoney Looser, The Making of Jane Austen, 2017, p. 20). With a charming contemporary inscription to the front endpaper of each volume, "J. L. Boulter. The gift of my beloved pupils Theophila and Sarah Mary Spencer, Banstead Park"; Northanger Abbey/Persuasion with an additional ownership signature underneath "Charles Richardson 1910". About this Item: London George Allen, 1894. First fully illustrated edition, one of 250 large paper copies 'printed for England and 25 copies for America'; 4to (250 x 168 mm); with the illustrations specially printed on China paper and laid down, a very few, minor marginal marks, browning to fore-edge, else fine; contemporary Venice style binding by J. Weidman of Vienna, the upper cover onlaid with intricate strapwork, enhanced and panelled in gilt, the rear cover blind-embossed with a decorative honeycomb motif, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, as published, rebacked preserving original tree calf spine, near-fine. The first edition of this title to include illustrations with the text since Bentley's edition (first published in 1833) only contained an illustrated frontispiece. This copy would appear to be unique in having such an elaborate and intricate binding by the Viennese binder; J. Weidman 'k.u.k. Kammerlieferant' (gilt embossed inside upper cover), which translates as 'Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Chamber'. This indicates that Weidman held not only a Royal Warrant (k.u.k. Hoflieferant) but the higher warrant as personal suppliers to the Emperor and the Empress. An Imperial and Royal Warrant of Appointment during the Austro-Hungarian Empire was issued to vendors who supplied goods or services to the Austrian imperial court in Vienna and/or the Hungarian royal court in Budapest. The warrant was normally an official document, which enabled the supplier to advertise the fact and thus lend itself prestige. Suppliers continued to charge for their goods and services. The application process took years and was given only to those deemed of the highest quality to be worth to receive the honour upon personal approval of the monarch. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) renowned illustrator, in pen and ink, of classic titles; he was born in Ireland where his skills as an illustrator were recognised while still a teenager. Consequently Thomson was trained by John Vinycomb, the head designer at Marcus Ward & Co., a prominent Belfast publishing house. He subsequently moved to England, working from 1883 for MacMillan & Co., illustrating all six of Jane Austen's novels and other literary classics. By 1900 he had become one of the most popular illustrators of his time. However, during the First World War there was less demand for his style of work and he took a job with the Board of Trade until his untimely death from heart disease. Seller Inventory # 99311
