About this Item: Peacock/ Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd., 2010. Softcover. Condition: New. First edition. In the delightful social comedy of Pride and Prejudice (1813) Jane Austen delicately handles the problem of love and money in marriage where, in spite of many hurdles, eventually love triumphs over `pride` and `prejudice`. With a mild satiric tone Austen unfolds the growing romance between the Bennet daughters and the eligible young bachelors, but keeps the reader guessing, as much as the girls` mother and the neighbourhood, about the prospects of the tentative relationships. Elizabeth and Jane are the most delightful and the sweetest of the five Bennet sisters, but Jane`s lover Mr Bingley has snobbish sisters and friends while Elizabeth`s suitor Mr Darcy himself is proud of his lineage. How are the problems to be solved? Or, how does pride get humbled and prejudice dissolved? Every page is enjoyable for the mellowed humour, and fine narrative touches. Printed Pages: 336. About this Item: London George Allen, 1894. Rare larger format Peacock Edition, 1st Thus. 13 x 19.6 cm green boards with titles and gilt decoration to the front and spine. Top edge only gilt, other edges uncut. White endpapers, xxvii (i), 476 (2)pp with illustrations by Hugh Thomson throughout. Not mentioned in Gilson, this is a rare variant of the first edition which differs from the commonly found state in that it is over 1cm taller and wider with a plain border around the edge of the decoration on the front board, white endpapers and the top edge only being gilt whilst the other edges are uncut. The boards are in very good overall condition. The fore edge corners of the front board are rubbed through at the tips, as is the foot of the lower joint. There are tiny bumps to the top corners of the back board and more obvious one at the bottom corner at the joint. The binding is tight and square. Internally, there is a very neat previous owner name in ink, dated December 1894. The pages are generally very clean with only occasional minor spots and marks and it retains its original frontispiece tissue guard. One of only a few known examples of this rare variant. Rainford & Parris Books welcomes enquiries, so please do not hesitate to ask if you require further images or have any questions. All books are packaged with great care. Seller Inventory # 200438
