About this Item: Oxford - The Clarendon Press 1923, 1923. First edition thus. The limited large paper edition of 1000 copies, of which 950 were for sale. This is presumably one of the 50 copies that were not available for sale as it comes from the Chapman family, volume I bears an inscription from R. W. Chapman which reads: "Michael Wood Chapman from his father, the editor" and the other four volumes are signed. The books are all firmly bound in the publisher's marbled boards with grey cloth spines and paper spine labels, the extremities are slightly bumped and rubbed and there are one or two minor marks. The text blocks are slightly toned, foxed and dusty. All volumes retain their original dust jackets, vols I, II & IV are in very good condition with only minor toning, small chips and short closed tears, vol III's jacket has fared slightly worse and is a little more rubbed and marked and vol V had suffered more than the others, with loss and longer tears which had been repaired amateurishly with tape, leaving tape burns, it has now been professionally conserved and stabilised with tissue and presents fairly well. An attractive set of this important scholarly edition of Austen's works, uncommonly found in the jackets and with a good association to the scholar in question. Seller Inventory # 3825

About this Item: 1907, 1907. Original pen-and-ink watercolour illustration (370 × 267 mm) presented in an attractive conservation wash-line mount. Margins slightly marked. In excellent condition. The original signed illustration for the "Pride and Prejudice" published in 1907 as part of the "Series of English Idylls" by J. M. Dent & Co. The illustrations Brock created are a full and original revision of his previous illustrations for the "Pride and Prejudice" published by Macmillan in 1895. The costume and interior decor depicted in these illustrations is reputedly accurate to the Regency period, for Charles Brock and his brother Henry used to collect antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio. C. E. Brock was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in the year following the publication of these illustrations. The scene depicted shows Kitty and Lydia welcoming their sisters to a lunch they have prepared. Seller Inventory # 75970
