About this Item: Peacock/ Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd., 2010. Softcover. Condition: New. First edition. In the delightful social comedy of Pride and Prejudice (1813) Jane Austen delicately handles the problem of love and money in marriage where, in spite of many hurdles, eventually love triumphs over `pride` and `prejudice`. With a mild satiric tone Austen unfolds the growing romance between the Bennet daughters and the eligible young bachelors, but keeps the reader guessing, as much as the girls` mother and the neighbourhood, about the prospects of the tentative relationships. Elizabeth and Jane are the most delightful and the sweetest of the five Bennet sisters, but Jane`s lover Mr Bingley has snobbish sisters and friends while Elizabeth`s suitor Mr Darcy himself is proud of his lineage. How are the problems to be solved? Or, how does pride get humbled and prejudice dissolved? Every page is enjoyable for the mellowed humour, and fine narrative touches. Printed Pages: 336. A relative unknown illustrator Hugh Thompson was an Irish Illustrator born at Coleraine near Derry. he took the task of creating 160 line drawings to produce the first and still finest illustrated edition. The success of George Allens " PEACOCK EDITION " launched Thompson's career as as a first class and prominent illustrator who is best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. In total, Thomson illustrated sixty-five books and contributed a large number of illustrations to magazines and other periodicals. When working on a new illustration, Thomson would research his subject in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He would often take detailed notes on costumes, furniture, old prints, and architectural records. His attention to detail can been seen in his sketchbooks, which include pages devoted to the changing styles of ladies and gentleman attire. Jane Austen born 16 December 1775 died 18 July 1817 was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's novels remained in obscurity until this 1894 first illustrated edition was published. 61 different publishers reprinted her titles up to 2010 before the explosion of electronic reprint companies. About this Item: Ruskin House. George Allen. London, 1894. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover. Dark green cloth with 'peacock' decorations in gold. Gold lettering. All edges gilt. Clean and tight and in quite good condition overall. Corners are not as sharp as when the book was new, but they have only the faintest wear. Back cover, plain green, has some gentle & expected shelf-wear. Attractive personal bookplate on the inside front cover, the name Samuel A.B. Abbott, a noted Boston collector from the turn of the century. Gift inscription from 1894 on the first blank page. There is foxing to the endpapers and first few leaves (also at the end). Tissue guard is missing from the frontispiece. Title page is dated 1894, making this the first edition of this edition. 476 pages. Text block tight. In all, a very attractive copy which has every indication of never having been read. Its flaws are entirely from the aging of the materials, never from rough handling or accident. A subtle and even overall toning to the pages. Gilt edges are free of scratches. Doubtless, the close inspection of a perfectionist might drive them to keep searching for a 'perfect' copy; but this is as nice an example of the famous Peacock binding as we've seen.
