Item Description: 1882. First Edition. TWAIN, Mark. The Prince and the Pauper, A Tale for Young People of All Ages. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882. Octavo, original three-quarter brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled boards, endpapers, and edges. $3200.First American edition, first issue, second state, of "the best book for young folks that was ever written,"¯ (Harriet Beecher Stowe), in original three-quarter morocco binding.Thought by his family and many of his friends to be his best work, The Prince and the Pauper represented a risky departure for Twain in his attempt to write a serious and thoughtful adventure story for children. He considered publishing the book anonymously, as he feared that his reputation as a humorist would hurt its chances with the public, but finally decided to put his name to it, "and let it help me or hurt me as the fates shall direct."¯ "The Prince and the Pauper was to be an act of culture. He had no hesitation, as he had had with Tom Sawyer, over whether this was a book for children or for grownups. From the very start he knew that he was writing for children"¯ (Kaplan, 238, 248). According to Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe once told him, "I am reading your Prince and the Pauper for the fourth time". And I know it is the best book for young folks that was ever written"¯ (Kaplan, 240). First issue, second state, with Franklin Press imprint on copyright page and "estate"¯ changed to "state"¯ on page 124, line 1. BAL 3402. Johnson, 40. MacDonnell, 44-45. McBride, 70. Owner signature.Interior quite clean, mild rubbing to boards. A near-fine copy. Bookseller Inventory # 65871

Item Description: Boston J. R. Osgood and Co 1882, 1882. First American edition, with "Franklin Press" on the copyright page. With 192 illustrations. Square 8vo, publisher’s original sheep binding, a deluxe binding offered by the publisher, one of a small number, now quite scarce. 411 pp. A handsome copy, the sheep in quite good condition with some typical rubbing and an antique strengthening to the hinges. All in all, a quite collectible copy with some of the age evidence one would expect with all of the sheep bindings. THE RARE FIRST STATE IN ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE BINDING STATES. Twain's timeless tale of two little boys who switch places to see how the other half lives. This is the scarcest and most expensive binding offered by the publishers and is very elusive in the marketplace. THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER was quite unlike anything Twain had done up till that time. It is a fine adventure with a delicate vein of "Twainian" humor running throughout. Twain took up a short domicile in Montreal in an attempt to establish residency there so that he could register the copy-right in Canada, England and the United States. His past encounters with piracy led him to make this attempt. Bookseller Inventory # 22775

Front free endpaper is torn about 2" where it meets the binding; rear free endpaper is torn about 1.5". Light chipping to the fore-edge of the ffe. Item Description: James R. Osgood and Company, Boston, 1882. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration front and spine, black stamped decorations front and spine. 192 illustrations. 411 pages. Later issue, with Franklin Press imprint but textual corrections on pages 124, 263 and 362. ("Later" might have been a few days; there seems to be considerable confusion about the first five printings as to chronology and timing, all within a year or so.) The covers are worn at corners and spine-ends, with slight loss of cloth. Scuffs and specks. The endpapers and edges are heavily foxed, but the rest of the pages are not foxed. Name in ink on front endpaper. There is a crack at the manuscript page, showing the threads, otherwise the book is sound, with tight hinges and pages. Overall, a very decent example, with bright gilt both front and spine. Bookseller Inventory # 001257

It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 – 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist.
